Lillies and Light

The people in charge of our city parks here in Medicine Hat, have outdone themselves again this year.  The flower beds are just stunning, with colour combinations and varieties of flowers that just boggle my mind.  A display near my house features these tall, exotic lilies with brilliant orange flowers on tall spikes, and they’re surrounded with maroon, orange and green flowers and foliage.  What really caught my eye though, was the light coming through the big leathery leaves of the lilies, illuminating the brilliant colour scheme that mother nature has arranged for our pleasure.

Sunny Dayz

This is such a great time of year here in Alberta, and in Medicine Hat, especially. It’s rodeo time, and full-on summer.  The temperature soars to 35 degrees and sometimes 40 and you could fry an egg on the pavement down at the grounds.  But we all still go and wander around with our mini donuts and guzzling anything cold, enjoy the rodeo and the concerts, see old friends.
At home, my garden is full of sunflowers and zinnias, yarrow and rudbeckia, so  of course we have to have a bouquet.  Here’s yours.

Squash Blossoms

While I’ve been off to Calgary and Nanton, my little garden has been very busy…first we had all that rain, and now lots of sun and heat. The squash have broken through the chicken wire fence (rigged up to keep the deer out) and long tendrils loaded with blossoms, gallop forth by about a foot a day!  I’m into the recipe books looking for recipes for squash-blossom-anything.  Ideas anyone?

One Crow Hoppin’

On the weekend, while visiting my parents, we were ALL visited by a family of blue eyed crows.  They spent 15 minutes fighting over and endlessly debating access to the birdbath.  They’re so interesting in their interactions with each other, so obviously social and intelligent.  I’d love to know their opinion of us humans and our activities.  Or would I.

Mad Possum

Can you see that p.o’d look in her eyes, and the one cocked ear?  She was camped out on top of the barbecue, one of her favourite roosts, and the magpies proceeded to harass her. It’s on-going around here, and so far the magpies win, hands down….or should I say wing tips down?

Magpie Drama

There’s a lot of Magpie Drama around here these days.  They’re causing trouble with the robins and the blackbirds, probably raiding their nests.  And when they’re between jobs like that, they harass poor Possum.
You can tell that I caught him here scolding furiously, with his hands on both hips!

Petunias For Mom

For Mother’s Day, I brought my mom a beautiful hanging basket bursting with these luminous pink petunias.  I’m so lucky to still have both of my parents and that they’re both as well as they are. That is the true gift; these flowers are just a token of my gratitude,

River Birch Abstraction

More along the lines of abstraction, this is a close-in view of the beautiful birch tree in the back yard. You can see how close I was…close enough to hug a birch!

Sunny

It felt like time for a sunflower.  This was a demo for my painting class last night, and I finished it today.  It’s twice as big as the usual daily….7 X 10″ and sent to brighten all your days and get you moving with plans for your garden.  Be sure and throw a few sunflower seeds in the ground.  You won’t regret it!

Morning Glories on the Lam

One of my favourite parts of town, especially in the summer, is “The Flats”.  An old neighbourhood, established on a big river flat, it has so much charm and character. Probably because of the trapped heat and the rich river silt soil, it also has the most fabulous gardens.  This particular garden was so stuffed with flowers and veggies that the morning glories decided to make a break for it, and made their escape through the picket fence!
