Marigold

This is all you get for today…..I’ve been home so little for the past 2 weeks that today was catch-up day!! I cleaned this house from top to bottom, taught an art class, did laundry, mowed the lawn and made pickles.  Amidst all of that I attempted a new approach to painting flowers…a more one-stroke calligraphic method.  I did one with several flowers in it as well, but it was even worse than this!!

Three Crows in a Bird Bath

I’m aware that things have really “gone to the birds” with my blog these days, but these crows have been begging to be painted.  These are part of the family of crows that have taken over my parents lovely back yard….not the ideal situation if you value undisturbed sleep and peace in general!  Here they are monopolizing the bird bath. Their antics are entertaining though, with their bird-politics and their obvious intelligence. Now that the babies are raised they seem to have moved off to other locales…which is even more of a blessing than their presence.

A Nod to Summer

Big doings in the family this weekend, and I’m enjoying the festivities, so no painting today.  Instead, a photo…A Nod to Summer, because today there’s a change in the wind, and it has the nip of fall. This is one of the photos from pickling day and here’s my wonky little sunflower (the yellow one) from a blog painting a few days ago.  There’s so much difference between a painting and a photograph, and each has it’s charms.

Happy weekend all!

August Assortment

Here’s another bouquet from the back yard ( I warned you!)  One of my favourite plants is a perennial called Russian Sage. That’s the periwinkle blue in this arrangement; tiny blue, long-blooming flowers on tall fragrant spikes.  It smells aromatic…similar to our wild prairie sage, and that beutiful blue is such a great complement to the warm colours of the sunflowers & zinnias. Did I mention that I love summer?

CraZy Sunflower

Brace yourselves…my yard is full of sunflowers and I keep bringing them in the house, where I promptly fall in love with them.  I didn’t realize what a gem this one was till I sat down and really looked it it…he’s just a little guy, and my painting fails to convey how extraordinarily beautiful and wonky he is.  He has this wonderful blue and green center, surrounded by a gorgeous fuzzy fringe, and the petals seem to be all different lengths and go in haphazard directions; a true individual.  But aren’t we all. The great thing about painting is that it affords the painter an opportunity to really LOOK at things we might otherwise miss. I’m never disappointed.

Shaggy

My favourite sunflowers are the big, heavy-headed ones, and last week my friend Kathy brought me a bouquet of them….we were both sad about the loss of our friend Joyce.

As the week has gone on those sunflowers have gotten saggier and shaggier….and more fun to paint.
So to you Joyce…I hope there are fields full of sunflowers where you are now.

Any Day Now

The tomatoes are hanging…., heavy and abundant.  I’m so enjoying my garden every single day, and this is the best tomato crop I’ve ever had. Except for this one guy who is almost there, they’re all that translucent golden-green shade they have just before they turn red.    Tonight before supper I was out there beating the underbrush for just one really ripe one for supper.  No luck.  But…..any day now!

My Summer Deck

My apologies to the followers of this blog, for I’m away from home and was unable to access the Internet last night. We got it figured out this morning so here’s your painting.

The weather here has been absolutely glorious, so  I painted out on my deck yesterday, and this was the scene; my little chimineya amongst the flowers and that famous brillian, bouncy Medicine Hat light that I love so much.  Enjoy your summer!

Flowers & Pickles

If you grew up in a rural environment and in my generation, then you know what August was all about! We would can and freeze, butcher,  harvest and pickle every garden and farm product we had on the place! Amongst all that we’d be making meals for our sizable family plus the haying crew or the combiners, depending on the year, along with whoever else showed up.  By the end of those summer days (some times around midnight) we’d  swear we never wanted to cook another meal, or wash another dish!
No wonder I can’t let summer go by without making a few pickles at the very least. I did a dozen jars of dills last evening,(I was finished long before midnight) and this was the still life I “found” on my cupboard this morning.

Winery In the Hills

Marty and Marie Bohnet, owners of the Cypress Hills Winery, truly subscribe to the “if you build it, they will come” school of business. They built this oasis of loveliness in the middle of pretty much no-where, and in a few short years it has become a destination for thousands, an award-winning business and a genuine vineyard on the Canadian Prairies.
If you haven’t been there yet….GO.
You won’t be sorry.
