Echodale Christmas

Echodale ChristmasThis blog has introduced you before to our gem of a Regional Park here at Medicine Hat, “Echodale”.  It is a restored farm with all kinds of recreational advantages for us all.  Summer time is great there with the poultry and animals in residence, the garden growing and the cooks in the kitchen baking bread in the old wood stove.  But winter is fun too, with hay rides and wiener roasts.  Here it is, the beautiful old log house garlanded up for Christmas.

Doing these latest paintings is gradually getting me in the mood for the Season, and today I had some really great young friends drop by with their various beautiful kids in tow.  Now that REALLY made my day!  Hope your Christmas joy meter is ticking up a notch or 2 every day as well, remembering that it really is all about relationships.

Barn @ Echodale

I spent a beautiful morning painting on the hillside above the buildings at Echodale this summer.  What a lovely old white barn, of the style built around here about 100 years ago.  There are still quite a few of these around the countryside, but not many are as well-preserved as this one.  The spectacular setting of the S. Saskatchewan River valley doesn’t hurt either.

Corner of Canyon & Delgado

A few years ago, I was blessed enough to be given an Artist’s Residency in a lovely old adobe compound on Canyon Road in Santa Fe.  It truly was a magical experience in a mystical town. Just up the street from my studio was the corner of Delgado Street, with the most intriguing and delightful adobe home ever.  I always wondered about the history of the place, (of that entire area of town actually) and wished I’d lived there 100, or even 200 years ago.

Medalta Posey

A couple of weeks ago, my sister visited from Saskatchewan, and she & I went to visit our fabulous World Heritage Industrial Museum,  Medalta Potteries. She told me it was the highlight of her visit (never mind the teamroping her family were competing in!)
Disbursed about the site were these little bouquets in jam jars and this one happened to be sitting in a brilliant shaft of light from one of the many skylights in the old factory. I like to keep a sharp eye out for visual treats like this.

Echodale Farmhouse

I’ve been trying to get to Echodale all summer, and finally made it today. AFTER all the animals are gone, and there’s no-one baking bread in the kitchen or hammering out horse shoes in the blacksmith shop! Darn it anyhow.
It was very beautiful though, and quiet.  I was able to sit and do a little sketchy painting of the old log house and enjoy the absolutely perfect weather.  I wandered about and enjoyed the flowers and the sight and sound of the S. Saskatchewan River sliding by. Hope you all enjoyed your Labour Day weekend as much as I did.

The Queen of Steven Ave.

Just down the block from the Hyatt, among old sandstones, is this exquisite  red brick building … the L. D. Doll, built in 1907.  It looks like it would’ve been a pharmacy originally, with a beautiful apartment upstairs.  There are the most beautiful windows you ever saw with this bow window being only one of them, and the brickwork and arches and sandstone inlay have created something that must have caused a great deal of pride in it’s day. Calgary would’e been a very beautiful and exciting place in 1907!

The Piper

We had a “Celtic Celebration” here in the Hat yesterday. The South Alberta Pipe and Drum has reached it’s centennial, and to celebrate they, along with our 2 wonderful concert bands, held a performance at the  world heritage  Medalta Potteries Site. My Scottish/Irish genes (jeans?)  were jumping up and down to the skirl of the pipes. It was pretty darn sweet!

Lodge @ Ft. Walsh

A few years ago I went to a powwow at Ft. Walsh.  I loved this beautiful white tipi against the black trees and the stacking depths of the hills…those magical Cypress Hills.

I think it’s time for another powwow.

Dorothy’s Relic

Here’s another in the Dorothy Series, this being the landmark old elevator, right beside the road at Dorothy.  You can see the Red Deer River badlands behind it, resting under the setting sun. See previous blog posts of the old church and the garage and if you get the chance, take a trip there..it’s a gorgeous prairie place.

Medalta

Today’s “daily” is of our famous Medalta Potteries site, one of my favourite places here in the Hat.  Now a World Heritage Industrial Museum, it was the first industry in western Canada, and provided the railroads, cafes and hotels of the nation with their crockery..among many other things.  It’s collection now includes 30,000 pieces of that work, along with a fabulous Pottery Artist’s Residency,  and just the absolute beauty of the place. If you’re ever here don’t miss it!!
