This morning I found a painting of a surreal-looking black horse, and while I loved the colour and movement in the piece, I disliked the fact that the horse was not anatomically correct at all! So I decided to have a shot at it. Rarely do I paint or draw anything that isn’t from my own experience, but it’s fun, once in awhile to exaggerate and stretch reality…like I do with the Spirit Ponies. So here’s my rendition of a wild black stallion…What shall we call him? Why not Toronado…the name of Zorro’s horse.

Side Trip 3
Well, this is officially a “Series”. I just keep wanting to play with this landscape. Today I painted the hillside red, and then let it dry. I then went in with my magc frisket pen and drew into the landscape. Once that was dry I painted over it with the blues and greens, yellows & oranges. Once the resist was removed, there was this batik-like effect. I kinda like the results and I really loved the process.

Spirit Bear
Well today’s painting is meaningful to me on several levels. It is inspired by the sculpture in front of the Whyte Museum which I so admired in Banff last week. And then the news about the 2 grizzly cubs killed by trains this week really knocked me sideways. Add to that the changing climate and what the effect that’s having on our polar bears, and you could say I’m bear-ly thinking about anything but bears.
Time to take a moment to acknowledge the Spirit of the Bear.

Emotion
Not saying what today’s painting is about…that would preclude you letting it do the talking! So let me know what it says to you….I’ll be interested to hear.

War Pony
Today I felt like playing, so I did this little abstract running horse. He needed jazzing up so I added feathers and some war paint, and whadya know?! a War Pony. It looks like he’s galloping past a corner of the globe, so he could be a globe-trotting War Pony. Whatever. It’s fun to simplify and experiment.

White Horse Series-#4
With a black drawing pen, I’m too able to create little dips & doodles, so this time I used a charcoal pencil and allowed myself straight lines only! It is fascinating to me how very little information you need to include in order to have an image that says “horse’! This would not be mistaken for camel, cow, donkey or even zebra. That little piece of “knowing” has been the gem I’ve taken from this exercise in abstraction….A horse is a horse, of course of course.

White Horse Series-#3
This piece is a bit simpler yet and the red background is my idea of fun….a dramatic backdrop for my #3 guy. Again, black pen and no worry about mistakes…I just try to get the essence of “horse”
I’m packing paintings up for my up-coming show in Calgary. Normally I’d rather crawl across broken glass than go to the big city that Calgary has become, but I’m looking foreward to this show. Hope to see you all there!

White Horse Series-#2
OK, I know this looks pretty simple, but I’m not happy with how much anatomical detail I got in the horse. It’s like swimming upstream for me to NOT put in details like joints and muscles, dips and curves. I’m trying for a very stylized horse, and I drew with a black ink pen; there was no erasing or going back. Sigh. Oh well, the painting part was lotsa fun.

White Horse Series-#1
I’ve been playing around in series again, experimenting with abstraction. This, the first in the series is pretty much my usual M.O wherein the horse has to be anatomically correct and things pretty much representational. I let myself go wild with the sky and put on a funky border. We’ll see what I can come up with tomorrow.

Space Junk
OK, I was going to throw this out, but then I was surfing through some of my favourite daily painting blogs and found some abstractions by another artist that made just about as much sense as this does. This modern wonder was inspired by a doodle that someone left at my desk at work this week. It can be whatever you need it to be. With a hug from me thrown in!
