Blowin’ In The Wind

Here are theseBlowin" in the Wind fabulous Clydesdale mares again….I’ve painted them often, and if you follow my work at all, you’ll recognize them.  So regal in any format, but unless you’re in their presence, it’s impossible for an artist to portray their immense size, never mind the sheer magesty and the serenity that they, among all the breeds seem to convey. It is an awe inspiring experience just to be with them.

Barn @ Echodale

I spent a beautiful morning painting on the hillside above the buildings at Echodale this summer.  What a lovely old white barn, of the style built around here about 100 years ago.  There are still quite a few of these around the countryside, but not many are as well-preserved as this one.  The spectacular setting of the S. Saskatchewan River valley doesn’t hurt either.

Bossy Cow Heaven

Well I nearly went cross-eyed trying to do this drawing.  The reference photo had 6 cows in it and trying to figure out where one spotted cow ended and another began was some fun.  Have you ever noticed in a herd of Holsteins, how individual each of their spot patterns are, and how varied?  Bet you’ll be checking it out from now on, won’t you.

Stu on Patrol

Well, I finished the portrait of Stu, and hope that his people think that I’ve captured him.  I had to go back and hang out with Stu for a second time, so that I could see him in “action” as the working dog he is. He keeps an eagle eye on those pesky horses, just to be sure none of them get out of line. Stu is  quite a guy, and I enjoyed every moment of doing this portrait.

Petticoat Junction

Good friends who keep my horse for me also have a whole bunch of other animals, which totally adds to the quality of my life. Just look at the comedic value of this little scene right here for instance!
And can you appreciate the attraction that chickens might have for an artist? There’s always a drama, there’s guaranteed to be comedy, and best of all there’s the magic of sunlight and feathers.

Poultry on Patrol

Painting poultry is one of the most enjoyable tangents I like to go off on, and these big white geese have been some of my favourites.  Painting white with watercolour means that you have to know where that white goes ahead of time (the white is the naked paper, and has to be painted around)…and the effect of light through white plumage is just too much fun.  All this is aside from the attitude of these guys, the beady red eyes, and gorgeous bright beaks (as long as they’re not biting you with them!)

Delphiniums @ Echodale

Echodale Farm  was my location of choice yesterday, and the flowers were in all their glory; there were even some delphiniums still in bloom.  I loved how the light hit them and lit them up against the dark foliage background.  Again, I tried to paint them much wetter and more directly, with no layering or glazing. It’s fun, but I’m not getting the lost edges I want,   so I’ll keep trying.

Flowers & Pickles

If you grew up in a rural environment and in my generation, then you know what August was all about! We would can and freeze, butcher,  harvest and pickle every garden and farm product we had on the place! Amongst all that we’d be making meals for our sizable family plus the haying crew or the combiners, depending on the year, along with whoever else showed up.  By the end of those summer days (some times around midnight) we’d  swear we never wanted to cook another meal, or wash another dish!
No wonder I can’t let summer go by without making a few pickles at the very least. I did a dozen jars of dills last evening,(I was finished long before midnight) and this was the still life I “found” on my cupboard this morning.

Nantons’s Skyline

As you all know, I was in Nanton for the Ranch Rodeo this w/e, and as always I enjoyed their beautiful row of elevators.  Every town in S. Alberta used to have a similar skyline, but them days are over……except in Nanton for some reason, where they stand sturdy, freshly painted, and apparently operational.
My nostalgia-meter goes ballistic, and I have to take a few minutes to just sit and enjoy.

Forgotten

When my Aunt relocated to a new farm yard, this relic of that farm’s early days was left out in the pasture below the corrals.  Unlike today’s fiber glass and plastic vehicles, this one will gradually return to the earth from which it was made. Unless someone comes along and restores it.

Again, I used only my flat brush for this one.  Can you tell?  It’s really fun and I think I’m less inclined to “over work”.
