Laura’s Boots

Bright southern Alberta summer sunshine,  pansies in an old enamel jug, and Laura’s boots & spurs…..that’s my idea of a fine “found still Life.” I “found” it on branding day at the Q last June, and Laura got married a month or so later.  I think maybe this is the wedding present I’ve been trying to come up with for her and Scott.

Sunshine on my Shoulder

Today I was practicing a form of denial….As the wind howled outside and the radio kept a steady stream of weather updates and heavy snowfall warnings, I painted this beautiful sunflower.  I grew this guy and brought him in the house in September.  Being the size of a dinner plate,  brilliant and radiant in every sense of the word, he totally dominated the room.
I think it’s lovely that I can bring all that beauty and loveliness into my life on a blizzardy day in November.  Now I’m passing it on to you!

Bossy Cow Heaven

Well I nearly went cross-eyed trying to do this drawing.  The reference photo had 6 cows in it and trying to figure out where one spotted cow ended and another began was some fun.  Have you ever noticed in a herd of Holsteins, how individual each of their spot patterns are, and how varied?  Bet you’ll be checking it out from now on, won’t you.

Morning Has Broken

This was the eastern sky on one of our fabulous mornings this past summer. One great thing about living on the prairie; there’s not much to spoil our view of the sky.

Ballet in June

A floral today, as we slide on towards winter.  My cousin gave me these beautiful oriental poppies a few years ago,  and for a short time in June, they’re a riot of fluttering, brilliant, luminous orange. They look like a troupe of ballerinas as they dip and sway with even the tiniest breeze. It was good to see them in my photo files this morning and to try and re-imagine them in paint.

Summer Kitchen

It’s so great to have a garden again, after several years without.  There’s something about being out in my bare feet amongst the vegetables.  This has been a fantastic tomato and pepper year, and this week I started canning both. The result was a “found still life” on my kitchen cupboard.  Anybody for pickled peppers?

Delphiniums @ Echodale

Echodale Farm  was my location of choice yesterday, and the flowers were in all their glory; there were even some delphiniums still in bloom.  I loved how the light hit them and lit them up against the dark foliage background.  Again, I tried to paint them much wetter and more directly, with no layering or glazing. It’s fun, but I’m not getting the lost edges I want,   so I’ll keep trying.

My Polly

Polly is in danger of being the most painted horse of the times, and here she is again…lookin’ good, for an old(er) girl!

Beautiful, snake-savvy and smart, she knows my vehicle, her white blazed face following every move till I deliver the cookies, or mints or special senior horse feed (her winter treat). Or even just a good belly rub.  It’s been a great summer for the horses; lots of grass, beautiful calm sunny weather and best of all….very few bugs!

Marigold

This is all you get for today…..I’ve been home so little for the past 2 weeks that today was catch-up day!! I cleaned this house from top to bottom, taught an art class, did laundry, mowed the lawn and made pickles.  Amidst all of that I attempted a new approach to painting flowers…a more one-stroke calligraphic method.  I did one with several flowers in it as well, but it was even worse than this!!

A Nod to Summer

Big doings in the family this weekend, and I’m enjoying the festivities, so no painting today.  Instead, a photo…A Nod to Summer, because today there’s a change in the wind, and it has the nip of fall. This is one of the photos from pickling day and here’s my wonky little sunflower (the yellow one) from a blog painting a few days ago.  There’s so much difference between a painting and a photograph, and each has it’s charms.

Happy weekend all!
