When did you last escape from the city lights and experience the night sky in all it’s glory? I think we humans are meant to wonder at the vastness and shimmering, stunning, beauty of space….it helps to keep our egos in check. Obviously, by the state of the world, we haven’t been doing enough of that lately. When people lived in tipis and yurts, igloos and hogans, they were in touch with that magnificence in a much more intimate way, enriching their lives in ways that we may have lost.

Winter’s Sun
There’s a pretty barn and ranch yard on the way to Elkwater, and I’ve stopped often to admire it, either with canola fields in bloom, with heavy rain clouds in the west, or like this day, with full-on winter. This was one of those days with ice crystals in the air and the weak winter sun attempting to do something about it Ah, winter. May as well like the weather you have, right?!

Stare Down at Breakfast
This crazy cat has cabin fever! Her first trip into our new winter season was this morning, and she freaked! If I hadn’t opened the door, she’d have left a Wily Coyote style hole in it on her way through! So she stalks me, she spends time glaring out the window. . She chases her toys, and then when she goes missing, I’ll find a big lump under the covers in my bed!! This is the stare down I got while making breakfast this morning. It might be a long winter.

Mystic Pronghorn
Today’s painting is in honour of one of the most beautiful animals on the prairie and a wish for them that the winter be gentle, the grass abundant, and the interferences of human habitation, as minimal as possible. SOLD

Horses of the High Country
Good friends operate the trailriding in summer and sleigh rides in winter, at beautiful Lake Louise in Banff National Park. Their winter pasture is high up on the front range of the rockies just east of the park. I was lucky enough to visit there for the spring gather a few years ago; an unforgettable experience.

Mission Bell
Ahhh, the blue skies and ancient adobe walls of New Mexico are calling me, and the closer we get to winter, the more that bell rings in my head! I notice a lot of restless Canadians these days….pacing and gazing southward. I imagine there are a lot of similarities between our behavior and that of our migratory bird friends.

Spirit Bear
Well today’s painting is meaningful to me on several levels. It is inspired by the sculpture in front of the Whyte Museum which I so admired in Banff last week. And then the news about the 2 grizzly cubs killed by trains this week really knocked me sideways. Add to that the changing climate and what the effect that’s having on our polar bears, and you could say I’m bear-ly thinking about anything but bears.
Time to take a moment to acknowledge the Spirit of the Bear.

Alpine Abstraction 2
OK, please bear with me. I did this panting again, trying to further simplify, painting with one flat brush and with one clean stroke if possible. It is more abstract, while it still looks like a mountain landscape. I think I like it better, so it was a valuable exercise.
