Side Trip 3

Well, this is officially a “Series”. I just keep wanting to play with this landscape. Today I painted the hillside red, and then let it dry. I then went in with my magc frisket pen and drew into the landscape.  Once that was dry I painted over it with the blues and greens, yellows & oranges.  Once the resist was removed, there was this batik-like effect. I kinda like the results and I really loved the process.

Side Trip

Last week my parents came to stay, and since my dad grew up in the Cypress Hills, he loves to go for a drive out there.  So we did, and it was a golden fall day with the exquisite clear light we’re so blessed with in October (if it’s not snowing!!)
We took a side trip across from north of Elkwater, east to Eagle Butte  on our way home, and there was one stunning hillside after another.  This was one of them. Good thing we went when we did; it looks quite different this week!

October Breezes

It’s that time of year! One golden, warm and best of all…windless day after another. Although winter isn’t my favourite, I’m glad to live in a place that enjoys the variety of the 4 seasons.

Meadowlark @ Writing-On-Stone

Bear with me people I got really close to a meadowlark down at Writing-on-Stone earlier this month.  Normally they won’t let you within a country mile, but this little guy just sat on his post and did that trilling chirrrp they do, and let me take as many photos as I wanted.  So brace yourselves,  you’ll be seeing more meadowlarks.  Did I say they’re my favourite bird?

Sandstone & Sunshine

This is the scene of our camp at Writing-On-Stone. I know! It seems surreal, right?… with the towering walls of rock and the Who ville-like tops of the Sweetgrass Hills peeping over rugged coulees. A sacred place to the plains tribes, there really is a sense of mystery and magic here.  I’m so grateful we  recognise and preserve extraordinary places like this.

Down On the Milk

There’s some trail riding being done down on the Milk River at Writing-On-Stone Provincial Park this weekend.  I go every year at this time and have such a great time there, camping and being with horses and friends.  For Canada Day, I choose to celebrate by hugging a hoodoo…..what did YOU do?

If you’ve never explored this part of the province, go! There are many treasures to be found…..there are more petroglyphs found here than anywhere else in North America, and no wonder with all those fabulous rock walls to carve on!
I did a scratchy little painting there today and will share it with you tomorrow….it’s too late tonight to get a decent photo of it.
Happy Canada Day to all!

Lodge @ Ft. Walsh

A few years ago I went to a powwow at Ft. Walsh.  I loved this beautiful white tipi against the black trees and the stacking depths of the hills…those magical Cypress Hills.

I think it’s time for another powwow.

Holding Hands Against the Sky

Cypress Hills on a blustery day; there’s no better place for dramatic skies.  The Native People called them the “Thunder Breeding Hills” for good reason.  This clump of spruce are situated on the hill above Spruce Coulee, and to me, they look like a group of dancers swaying against that windy sky.

Through Yellow Aspen

This felt very small today, after the big hummer!  But it gave me a chance to catch up on a few things around here…badly neglected things, trust me.
Hope you’re all having a creative and enjoyable weekend.

FT. Walsh October II

I wasn’t content with yesterday’s aspen, so today I decided to just paint without doing a drawing at all.  I spritzed the area of the paper where the yellow of the aspen foliage would go and then  dropped in paint and let it bloom.  I built the rest of the painting around that.  I think I like it better.  How about you?
