Talking Possum

This cat has lost her marbles lately.  After  wakening me  from deep sleeps last night because she figured she wanted to be out rather than in, she then spent the day imposing her will upon me as well! When I try to ignore her, this beseeching look along with loud plaintive wails, soon have me hustling to do her bidding.  Not sure when she stopped being my cat and I started being her bell hop.

Truckin’ on Through

Remember Bruce’s Beautiful Broncs, one of my “dailies” from late summer? Well this is them again.  Pacing with nervous energy in the morning before the rodeo, they bunch together like the herd animals they are, the air absolutely crackling with their collective power.  Horses rock.

Front Range Rhythms

There’s something so elegant about the contours of unaltered landscape; the undulations, carvings, upthrusts and foldings. This landscape has all of those as the mountains rear themselves up from the flat bed of the plains, each segment carrying it’s very own eco system and micro-climate. How dare we ever think we can “improve” on any of that.

Manes & Ears

If you’ve spent much time around horses, you’ll have noticed how sensitive and expressive their ears are.  Capable of swivelling pretty much 360 degrees, and perking, flattening, flopping and pinning, they’re like barometers of these beautiful animal’s every thought and intention.  Having said all of that, I don’t think we have any idea of the extent of the information horses receive and send via their exquisitely beautiful ears.

The Blue Jays Are in Town

It’s that time of year; the crows seem to have moved on, the magpies never leave, and the Blue Jays are passing through (I don’t mean our local baseball team either).  They hang around the bird feeder, shrieking at everyone else and gobbling up way more than their share. But they’re so colourful and comical, who would ever mind?

Possum Patrol

Here’s this goofy cat, pretending she’s a valuable member of home security around here.  Note the stalking lioness posture and the intensity of purpose. Funny thing is that once the temp goes below zero she seems to think she can conduct her surveillance from the comfort of the kitchen window.

Spirit Pony Sampler

More “Spirit Ponies” today, and this time in a sampler format….just for a change. Who knows where these guys come from or what I’ll wind up doing with them.  They might make a nice children’s book some day.  Meanwhile I hope you enjoy my little paintings from “the edge”.

This one is bigger than most of my dailies …41/2 X 14″ and thus the lowest bid is higher.

Side Trip 3

Well, this is officially a “Series”. I just keep wanting to play with this landscape. Today I painted the hillside red, and then let it dry. I then went in with my magc frisket pen and drew into the landscape.  Once that was dry I painted over it with the blues and greens, yellows & oranges.  Once the resist was removed, there was this batik-like effect. I kinda like the results and I really loved the process.

Side Trip 2

The little landscape I did a couple of days ago for this blog has continued to haunt me.  I kept thinking about it…the rhythm of the strips of yellow trees and undulating hills kept rolling through my head. I wanted to paint it again in a looser more impressionisitic way. So this time I didn’t do a drawing and I only allowed myself a flat brush, and I tried to do the minimum of layering.  Turns out it looks pretty much like the first one!  No matter what I do, I seem to do what I do!!

We’re Up Next

This painting was a treat to do! For one thing, it’s so great to paint large-scale after doing all the little “dailies” which are 5 X 7″.(This one is 30 X 20″ ). Another is that I really appreciate the bond between horse and rider, and I think that’s what was the driver for me to paint this at all.
Thirdly, I enjoyed painting all the gear;  leather & silver, rawhide and horsehair, straw and denim.  Such rich textures with rich history.
Not sure it’s finished. Should I lay in a big of sky behind?  Am sitting with it for now.
