Harmony

Horses, runningWhen horses are allowed to live as they evolved to live….in herds, they move as if of one mind.  Horses running in a herd are like a single entity that flows in harmony.  Even as this happens though, it seems that no two are on stride with each other; every horse choosing his rhythm within the band. Such perfection needs no interference from us, and for me, I just want every opportunity to witness it.

Amy

Well, today we got a real live model, and you can’t tell from this how very beautiful she is!  I’m in trouble all the time with my instructor (the brilliant Liz Wiltzen) because I gallop away in all directions, forgetting to measure and go slowly and methodically through the process. I’m like some of the boys in my grade 8 math class, who sat at the back, raced through their equations and got most of them wrong!  And then I wonder why it doesn’t look like the model!
We only had 3 hours to paint Amy, and this isn’t finished, but it was really a lot of fun.  Tomorrow? A different model, and we get all day with her.  I intend to go slowly and carefully, meanwhile everybody in the class is betting I’ll the first one done again.  DUH!

Mission Bell

Ahhh, the blue skies and ancient adobe walls of New Mexico are calling me, and the closer we get to winter, the more that bell rings in my head!  I notice a lot of restless Canadians these days….pacing and gazing southward.  I imagine there are a lot of similarities between our behavior and that of our migratory bird friends.

Mystic Bison

Recently I posted a photo of Porter’s buffalo which this “daily” is inspired by, but I wanted to add a little symbolism to suggest the power of these incredible animals.
The seven dots in the border represent the stars of the big dipper and the new moon is for possibilities. Representing the fragility of life and it’s beauty is the butterfly……..OR you can assign whatever meanings suggest themselves to you!

Hail Mary

Our summer skies have an entirely different personality from winter, the cloud structure being the difference.  We never see these towering thunderheads in winter, nor the devastation of the hail that often comes hurling down out of them.  Still, they are breathtaking from a distance.  I love the roiling, sullen layers of navy blue, transforming up into creamy, billowing crowns of  purest white, with subtle variations of colour and light on every level.

The Queen of Steven Ave.

Just down the block from the Hyatt, among old sandstones, is this exquisite  red brick building … the L. D. Doll, built in 1907.  It looks like it would’ve been a pharmacy originally, with a beautiful apartment upstairs.  There are the most beautiful windows you ever saw with this bow window being only one of them, and the brickwork and arches and sandstone inlay have created something that must have caused a great deal of pride in it’s day. Calgary would’e been a very beautiful and exciting place in 1907!

Steven Ave. Stampede Week

It was a brilliant, sunny day here in Calgary, the likes of which we get only a few every year.  The Steven Ave. Mall, the core of downtown, was full of people, eating in cafes on the street, playing, singing and dancing.  I heard native drumming too and a posse of Blackfoot in full regalia rode by on horseback.  I didn’t have my camera, which breaks my heart….a young guy with a headdress of feathers and buckskin breeches, rode  by busily texting from the back of his horse!! Do we have a “Distracted Riding Law”?

I did this little quickie from my camera…the scene just outside the doors of the hotel. Hope you all had a sunny summer day as well.

Pretty Painted Bull

As you know, I love colour, and that’s one of the reasons I’m such a rodeo fan.  If you want colour, that’s where it’s at Baby! Rodeo people are colourful, in every sense of the word, but oh,  the horses and the bulls!!

Magpie Drama

There’s a lot of Magpie Drama around here these days.  They’re causing trouble with the robins and the blackbirds, probably raiding their nests.  And when they’re between jobs like that, they harass poor Possum.
You can tell that I caught him here scolding furiously, with his hands on both hips!

Lucky’s

Anybody know what this is?  Well, it certainly doesn’t feel like my work  It’s dark and mechanical-looking and even sinister.

Since doing this daily practice, drawing has become a form of meditation for me, and I found this piece to be extremely challenging, requiring total concentration, and thus a deeper meditation. I enjoyed it, even though it’s not my usual subject matter, telling me that my creative “thing” might be just as much about the process as it is the result.
It’s drawn with Faber-Castell pen & ink, some watercolour and then F-C coloured pens. I’ll be waiting for feed-back as to what it is for you.
