A decade ago, a bunch of us artists were invited to display our work and the gorgeous Hyatt Hotel in downtown Calgary during the Calgary Stampede. Every day around noon, the local indians, from Tsuu S’ina, Siksika, Pikani, Kainai, and Sarcee tribes would ride, people AND horses, resplendent in their regalia, up 7th avenue past the hotel, right through the downtown and back to their camp at the stampede grounds. I’d try and get as many photos as I could, enjoying every moment of this fabulous parade.
I’ve referenced these photos many times in my work, and this new piece is the latest. There must’ve been and ice cream truck just up the street this day because nearly everyone had a fresh ice cream cone, and this handsome guy represents the fun and celebratory atmosphere that trailed this colourful band like stardust.
