The reference for this piece was taken in Aunt Shirley's massive garden when she was well into her eighties. Grant, her son, decided she was getting carried away and put a fence around it (he said it was to keep out the deer). She promptly roto-tilled 4 feet of new garden space OUTSIDE the fence and carried on.
I was blessed to grow up under the care of 2 master gardeners; my mother Verna, and 1/4 mile away, Aunt Shirley. These 2 women produced enough food for a whole community when i was growing up. We spent the summer hoeing, weeding, picking, canning, freezing, butchering, pickling and best of all...EATING!! It was a banquet every day, 3 times a day, with crews of men, us kids, all kinds of company, and the many festive occasions. How they did all of that plus all the community work and all of us kids' activities, is absolutely beyond me. Think I need a nap!
