Conchos & Leather

Ever since the Spaniards showed up on these shores, sporting all the tinsel they were known to wear, a cowboy without his silver is a rare sight indeed.
When I was a kid, Dad hired an old Scotsman to keep an eye on our cows, and live in our remote cow camp. Being somewhat a loner, he happily did so, along with his dog and a couple of horses.  Scottie soon became an integral part of our family.  When he died he left his chaps to me, and I treasure them to this day. They must be 75 years old by now, and sport the inevitable silver conchos and leather ties that still embellish the gear of cowboys today.

This little painting is an homage to Scottie, an true original, a character and one of Canada’s first cowboys.
