Well, here’s the portrait I did last week, before my portrait class. What can be cuter than a child with a pup (and a cuter kid would be hard to find!…which which doesn’t hurt either).
There were several elements that made this a real challenge to paint, and when I see it here I feel it’s not finished yet. However, for today, this is it!

Sitting Pretty
It was a “dog day” today. Nothing but a dog would do. So I did another portrait of my good friend Stu. The day I met him, he was out & about with his person, Brenda, and there were no livestock around. We wanted him to do his border collie “thing” and look all intense. All he could think to do was look pretty. There was obviously no work to do! So this is Stu with no horses to supervise or cattle to herd…..having a day off.

A Pup for Everyone
A few weeks ago, friends showed up at the horse sale in Maple Creek with seven red and blue heeler pups! They were the most adorable pups in the world and at the cutest possible wiggly fat stage of puppy-dom. And seven of them!! Needless to say, the kids (who were pretty darn adorable themselves) were in heaven; there was no fighting or tears because….there was a pup for everyone.

Stu on Patrol
Well, I finished the portrait of Stu, and hope that his people think that I’ve captured him. I had to go back and hang out with Stu for a second time, so that I could see him in “action” as the working dog he is. He keeps an eagle eye on those pesky horses, just to be sure none of them get out of line. Stu is quite a guy, and I enjoyed every moment of doing this portrait.

Stu
Well, we’re way overdue for a dog portrait, so meet Stu!
Like most border collies, nothing makes Stu happier than helping out with the livestock. Luckily, his “people” Brenda & Danny provide him with lots of fun & excitement.

Tee’s New Romels
My friend Trent, a working cowboy and family man who loves competing at Ranch Rodeos, is also a rawhide braider. Check out this incredible romel rein he just traded to his friend Tee, in exchange for a border collie pup! If you’re unfamiliar with rawhide braiding, take my word for it, it is an incredibly complicated and difficult art form. These reins are built of about 12 strands of finely cut rawhide strips (even this much of the process is difficult and time-consuming!) which are then tightly and beautifully woven into this exquisite heavy , yet lively on your horses mouth, rein. The added knots, loops and popper on the end are all of themselves a challenge that not many people care to even try. All I can say is….there must be a pretty special pedigree on that pup!

Jack
Meet Jack, the right hand man on my brother-in-law’s ranch in Saskatchewan. The place is situated in a series of beautiful rolly hills, and each hill shelters copses of trees and brush. Moving cattle there can drive you mad as they break for every bunch of brush and then refuse to budge. The only sane way to manage is to have really good dogs. And that is Jack; a really good dog. Brit
This little portrait is of Brit, a beautiful Australian Shepherd who belongs to my friends at Kananaskis Guest Ranch. Brit is a very intuitive, brilliant and low maintenance mutt. She’s happiest when her “family” is all together, and she’s available to help out. She doesn’t go in for plane rides or a lot of other frills. We can add sensible to her list of attributes.

Top Hand
Maybe I should get myself a small flock of sheep, so that when I get my dog, he’ll have something to do.
