Working Men

Horses love to work, especially with someone with whom they have an “understanding”.  Here’s my friend Dan, and his beautiful grey gelding, Memphis.  These two have a connection which is obvious, and the satisfaction of a partnership like this is one of life’s gifts.
As for me, the satisfaction is in witnessing and recording it.

The Cook

Last year on our visit to Quilchena Ranch we met Anne, who works as a cook there.  She had a successful career in Vancouver working in the law industry and raising her children. One day though, she had an epiphany.  Looking for a completely different way of life, she found herself here in the B.C. interior, working on a ranch. This day she was helping move and treat cattle……looking quite at home on her horse, and a long way from her former corporate world.

Winston & Blue

Not only is Winston wearing all blue denim (as is his preference), he’s with is usual mount, his blue roan, in the blue pre-dawn light. This painting is all about BLUE!

Quilchena Cowboy

Last spring my friend, photographer Kim Taylor, and I visited the historic Quilchena Ranch near Merritt B.C. Everybody there was so kind and hospitable & we had a great time.
This painting is of one of  the young cowboys in front of the blacksmith shop in the ranch yard…..a small adventure in time travel.

Katherine & Chester @ Horse Thief Cave

Writing-On-Stone is a magical place, and a highlight on trail rides down there is Police Coulee.  What sounds quite innocent is revealed to be more like a canyon, and was the conduit for whiskey traders and horse thieves back & forth across the American line.  Here’s my friend Katherine and the famous Chester at Horse Thief Cave.  They have a thuggish look about them don’t you agree?

Achievement Day

There’s something  truly wonderful about 4-H Achievement Day….for the parents every bit as much as for the kids.  All the work, all year long, culminates in a crack-of-dawn-rising, frantic-racing, hurry-up-and-waiting, insane kind of day.  Here’s Jessie & his dad Jeff, and the famous “Elmo” enjoying the triumphs of the day.SOLD

Cowgirls Rock

How lucky are we to live in a country where girls and women don’t need any one’s permission  to follow their bliss. There are lots of cowgirls in my family and in my acquaintance; trick riders, horse trainers, team ropers, barrel racers, veterinarians and ranchers.  This doesn’t mean that they aren’t engineers, teachers, nurses or doctors as well. Wonder what the Taliban would think of that.SOLD
