Cowgirl Couture

Sub cultures are very interesting to me, and having been raised in that of the west, I notice that like other subcultures, our is very fluid. What a cowboy or cowgirl wears varies hugely from one event or discipline to another.  You can tell by the crease of the hat whether it’s a rodeo cowboy or a working cowboy, a cutter or a reiner, whether from Texas or B.C.  The same goes for the gear and the clothing. And this just in; after decades of Wrangler being the one jean that almost everybody of ALL disciplines wore, I see that the young roughstock guys from Texas are all wearing Levis. So I predict you’ll be seeing that here within a year.   Just remember you heard it here first (unless you saw Courtney Todd’s photographs from her recent trip to Texas)!

Paul

Here I go with the portraits again. I have some really great friends, and this guy is one of them…..hopefully he still will be after he sees this blog entry!
Does he not have the best face ever? Happy is he, whenever I see him, mainly because it’s on a trail ride,  at a Ranch Rodeo, or something to do with horses and a western lifestyle. As an artist I couldn’t resist that impish grin, those twinkly eyes and especially the magnificent moustache!

New Moon Romance

Thought it was time for a little romance in my blog! That element has been neglected I think.  Everywhere I look, I see artists romanticising the west, so today it’s my turn to take a stab at it.
Silhouettes are tricky with watercolour, and I like the feel of them, so once in awhile I have to paint one.  Played with the sky for a supernatural effect…. to add to the romance! Now all we need is a manuscript.

A Good day to be a Rancher

The thing about ranching is that most of the work is done outside, aften in the worst weather conditions imaginable, with very little help, and even less cooperation from the livestock you’re trying to raise. The beautiful sunlit days like this one are few and far between. I love to paint these pretty days in June, and there’s a few in September and October as well.  On those days, it really is just like in the movies!

Paula’s Great Hat

Here I go, asking forgiveness from my portrait “victims” again.Funny how I can paint a horse to look exactly like himself, but when I try a do people, the results are often less than I hope for……and in no way show how gorgeous my subjects truly are. Trust me, this is hard!
This beautiful woman was on the trail ride last weekend, and she has such a great sense of style, exemplified by this fabulous palm leaf hat.  If you like her hat, you should see her horse!!  He’ll undoubtedly show up here one of these days.

Ben Crane

My friends are going to start avoiding me, for fear of their handsome visages being  ruined in watercolour… by me!  This is my attempt at a portrait of my friend Ben Crane, our most famous cowboy cartoonist and awesome musician. You’ve seen Ben’s cartoons and tales in Cowboy Country Magazine, and he’s one of Leanin’ Tree’s best-selling artists.  It was so great to spend time with Ben, his wife and daughter on the recent trail ride at Longview; he’s so engaging and colourful that I really wanted to paint him!  I think his self-portraits are much better though, so please accept my apologies Ben.

Young Man from The Gang

This young horseman came to the Ranch Rodeo as part of the Gang Ranch team.  If you didn’t know better you’d think I was doing an illustration for an old-timey cowboy tale; sort of like Will James used to do!  It really tickles my “time warp” sensibilities to see these young men so steeped in the traditional gear and style of dress. Combine that with the really fabulous horses we have today, it’s the best of both worlds.

Branding

So I’ve been MIA!  I went to a branding, and fell off the edge of the earth…the cyber-earth at least.  No cell phone reception, no Wifi, and thus, no blogging!

It was a great time though, with very good friends &  wonderful family.  Lots of work got done, and many laughs were had.  And though I DID get my painting done, I thought that for today I’d share a photo instead.  We had very little sun today, but it came out briefly, and I caught this silhouette in a  halo of smoke.

Shaking Out a Loop

It’s June again, which means branding season.  Such a big job, and so weather dependent. Groups of ranching families will all brand together, each place using the same day every year, and then all going to those respective ranches to help each other as their “day” comes up.

In this painting, Darren is rebuilding his loop, preparing to go and bring in another calf.
You can’t brand if it’s wet, so there’s lots of sky-gazing….the cook with her 50lb pound roast and mountains of food, probably has the most at stake!  We had a good day on Saturday though…..blue skies and lots of help, followed by famous hospitality and visiting.

Cowcamp Still Life

This Found Still Life is in the living room of a cowcamp on one of the big ranches in the B.C. interior.  The young cowoy and his wife who live there are both reflected in this shrine to their life together; her handmade quilt and an eclectic urn, his tooled leather cuffs and horsehair macate; his bucaroo-style straw hat, someone’s banjo; the artwork, an antique chair.  All these assembled objects, lovingly collected and brought together reflect the talents and interests of two young people with their whole lives ahead of them.
