Bull Trail Aspen

I spent yesterday afternoon out in the Cypress Hills, and this is one of the little Plein Air paintings I did.  It’s such fun to paint out in the landscape even if the wind blows your easel over, and flies wade around in the paint (they like the honey in my Graham paints).  There’s an immediacy in my work that I don’t get any other way. And the bonus is that time spent outside in a beautiful place.

Sunburst

OK, I’m hung up on sunflowers right now.  These are in the middle of my kitchen table and I can scarcely take my eyes off them…. I absolutely adore sunflowers, and they’re SO beautiful this year.  Usually they’d be frozen by now, so still having them demands that I DO something about it. Have you hugged a sunflower today?

My August Pots

This was yesterday!! And today is a whole other story….so cold I had to round up my merino wool socks, and I’m VERY tempted to turn on the furnace…(step away from that dial!) Thankfully, we’ve had 2 months of beautiful, calm and warm-to-hot weather, and I can bear the thought of autumn.  Almost.

Ripening Tomatoes

As August winds to a close (arrrgh, can you believe it?!) my tomatoes are ripening, along with the prairie grass and every kind of crop imaginable.  We’ve had such a gorgeous month, with sunshiney days on end. The deer have been sneaking in here at night and stuffing their faces with my petunias, but I have a fence around the tomatoes!!
Be sure to savour the bright, hot days along with your ripe tomatoes, corn, beets, potatoes and whatever other wonders you’ve grown….August is the best.    SOLD

Trees In Winter

I just wanted to play today….with colour. I paint with 3 colours, as taught to me by my Swami, John Farnsworth.  “The Three” as he calls them, are specific hues of red, yellow and blue, and a great deal of pleasure is found in the exquisite semi-neutral and neutral colours that can be arrived at from  these 3 primaries.   I  also enjoyed using the negative space between and around the trees to express those colours.  Ain’t life grand?!

Canola Fields in Bloom

It is astonishing to me how different the landscape, weather and agrology are if I drive a mere 2 or 3 hours west.  The canola fields are in full, eye-popping bloom here in Alberta, and this one was just a few miles east of High River, so there’s the added bonus of the mountains on the horizon.  Then for icing on the cake, a Chinook Arch!  I just love a road trip.

Petunia Parade

I spent pretty much the whole day in my yard today, and there never was a prettier day in the history of the world! The morning was dedicated to mowing, watering and doing my drawing….then went inside long enough to do the painting.
And back outside: weeding, pruning tomatoes, putzing….heaven.  Summer in this neck of the woods is surely heaven.  Lets all enjoy every possible moment!

Rainbow on Ross Creek

If you don’t like the weather in Alberta, wait a
minute….so the saying goes!  Today we had a cool (instead of hot) Chinook and sunshine, and by Sunday it’s supposed to be 37 degrees!

This painting is of the coulee below my house and a front that came through here last summer bringing wind, rain,  hail, and finally…. a rainbow!  Is that an attempt at an apology from the weather gods? Can’t think of a finer way to make amends….. apology accepted.

Wash Day

There’s a pretty little farmyard in a creek bottom on the way to Elkwater, and every once in awhile I’d go by on wash day, which always tickled me.  These days, this farmyard is abandoned so I’m really glad I had stopped one chinooky summer day and taken a photo.  Looks like a great day for drying laundry on the line….imagine the fresh scent of those clothes!
