Steven Avenue Ice Cream

Remember how I missed the shot of the natives and their cell phones?  Well this morning they rode through here again, only this time they must’ve run across an ice cream truck further up the street. Pretty Painted Bull

One Crow Hoppin’

On the weekend, while visiting my parents, we were ALL visited by a family of blue eyed crows.  They spent 15 minutes fighting over and endlessly debating access to the birdbath.  They’re so interesting in their interactions with each other, so obviously social and intelligent.  I’d love to know their opinion of us humans and our activities.  Or would I.

Mad Possum

Can you see that p.o’d look in her eyes, and the one cocked ear?  She was camped out on top of the barbecue, one of her favourite roosts, and the magpies proceeded to harass her. It’s on-going around here, and so far the magpies win, hands down….or should I say wing tips down?

Painted Pretty Steer

This guy is a retired roping steer that friends of mine have kept around just because he’s so darned easy on the eyes. I’ve painted him before, but with my new commitment to abstraction, I decided to try him again.  He’s already pink and purple, orange and green; all I had to do is push that a bit.  The attitude was a freebie.         SOLD

Portrait of Painted Smile

I’ve painted this famous mare before, and am always amused by her dozy and laid back demeanour…when she’s “off duty”.  Look out though when the chute gate is cracked and it’s time to buck.  Conniption doesn’t begin to describe it!  She’s getting old now though and will probably retire to a big pasture on the Milk River Ridge, so pay attention if you get to see her perform this summer.

The Piper

We had a “Celtic Celebration” here in the Hat yesterday. The South Alberta Pipe and Drum has reached it’s centennial, and to celebrate they, along with our 2 wonderful concert bands, held a performance at the  world heritage  Medalta Potteries Site. My Scottish/Irish genes (jeans?)  were jumping up and down to the skirl of the pipes. It was pretty darn sweet!

Money Maker

 This lovely range cow is from my brother’s herd, and here she is, making a living out on the southern Alberta prairie and ready to have a calf.  She’s hardy, resourceful and a producer.  Now if the Gods are with us and there are no recent scares like “Mad Cow Disease” we might be able to call her a “Money Maker”.

You Know you’re a Redneck……

And this is a northern redneck!  The Redneck Grebe is native to Canada and Alaska, nesting in the spring near small ponds and sloughs.  I’d never seen one before, but this guy was hanging out, brilliant in his mating plumage, at the Kerrywood Nature Centre in Red Deer last week.  An excellent swimmer and diver, you can see how far back his legs are positioned…like a merganser or a loon. I’ll be watching for more of these guys.

Power of the Horse

To the Navajo People, the horse represents power.  If you’ve ever had anything to do with horses, I’m sure you agree.  Next time you’re around a horse, notice how your tiredness melts away, your spirits rise and your troubles melt away.
