Stu on Patrol

Well, I finished the portrait of Stu, and hope that his people think that I’ve captured him.  I had to go back and hang out with Stu for a second time, so that I could see him in “action” as the working dog he is. He keeps an eagle eye on those pesky horses, just to be sure none of them get out of line. Stu is  quite a guy, and I enjoyed every moment of doing this portrait.

Paint 2

Having done my “painterly ” paint a couple of days ago, I tried to bring that to my usual, more representational style. That always “tightens” the results, but I think I did manage to let  the paint just do what it does without interfering too much.  I’d like to try it again, this time allowing for more pure colour to remain.

Matt & Shorty

This painting is of  Matt Robertson  at the Ranch Horse competition here in the Hat in July, while he and his catty little grey gelding were waiting for their turn to compete.
I like Matt’s face, the light as it emerges from the shade of that palm-leaf hat he’s wearing, and I like his relationship with his horse

Not only is Matt a good horseman, who makes his living as a ranch cowboy, he’s a wonderful singer-songwriter. Check it out at his web-site www.mattrobertson.com. His newest album, “The Voice” is awesome.

Stu

Well, we’re way overdue for a dog portrait, so meet Stu!
Like most border collies, nothing makes Stu happier than helping out with the livestock. Luckily, his “people”  Brenda & Danny  provide him with lots of fun & excitement.

Loon @ Police Outpost Lake

I couldn’t wait to attempt one of these extraordinary birds….I’ve only had a few minutes today, so this was a quick drawing in my sketch book, with overlays of watercolour.  Who can resist the fascinating blanket of dots, dashes and squares of white on a shiny black background; those squiggly calligraphic lines through the collar and onto the chest, the magnificent head and bright red eye!? All this is enough, and then!!      there’s the haunting call.  This was a close encounter with nature, and an incredible gift.

July,

One really important thing to my style of watercolour is the concept of “negative space”, which is clearly illustrated here in a portrait of a white bucking horse.  In order to depict this subject in watercolour, I have to have a really good idea not only where my paint will go (or NOT go),  but how much paint, and in the case of the white parts, no paint at all!  Does all this make any sense at all to anyone but me?  Ah well, I hope you enjoy the painting anyway.

Parade Day

Oh how I love painting these guys! How about this beautiful young face…and then there’s the regalia;  the designs an absolute delight for the soul. Thankfully many of the old outfits have been saved and some of the young women from the Blood Tribe (and undoubtedly others as well) are painstakingly relearning the design and beading techniques.
Probably, now that Calgary Stampede is over, this young guy has his basball cap, wranglers and a t-shirt back on, but at least he was generous enough to share this version of his history with all of us.

Pow-wow Dancer

Now that I’ve finally gained some confidence in my ability to paint people’s faces, I find it to be incredibly satisfying…..and I especially enjoy painting native faces. I saw this handsome guy doing a traditional dance at a pow-wow @ Fort Walsh several years ago and have been waiting for the day when I thought I could paint him.  Today was the day.

Eveylyn

Those of you who know me know what a struggle I have doing people.  And if adults are hard, I find children to be nearly impossible.  As a matter of fact I think this is the first watercolour of a baby that I’ve ever attempted!  I met Evelyn this week while in Calgary; her grandma, Jan, is my good friend, so I got to spend some time with her.  She is so precious and so beautiful that I was motivated to try and paint her. Don’t you just love that sober and contemplative gaze?!
