In His Shoes 5

So phew, the guy who owns these boots is today safely out of a war zone…….. for the 3rd time and hopefully the last! He’ll be wearing flip-flops right now, on a beach somewhere for a few days.

These are his going to wedding boots, or dressed up for whatever occasion.  Since he now lives “down east”  though,  I doubt he needs these much there, and so they live at my house.  We do have a family wedding this summer & it’ll be a perfect occasion for these pretty boots to get shined up and out of retirement.

In His Shoes 4

There, lurking in the basement, I found another pair of skate shoes.  This pair is a little more worn and despite frequent coats of polish, there are a few scuffs.  You never saw a guy who has always been so particular about the condition, style and functionality of his foot gear. I should have had a clue or 2 from that, one would think.
This piece was first drawn in pen & ink and then I only allowed myself to use a flat brush….the result being more “painterly”…maybe?

Sun Ponies

Maybe abstract isn’t the word….these latest paintings seem to have a lot of symbolism, and though they’re not rendered in my usual realistic style, the elements are fully recognisable. These ponies make me think of the ancient cave paintings we saw when I was in France….they were so much fun to draw and easy!  “A working artist is a playing artist”…right?!

Old Glass Insulator

A person needs to be of a certain age to know what this is, am I right?  I have saved a couple of these old insulators from the power lines of my childhood, simply because I think they’re beautiful.  And they make great practice when you’re trying to understand painting glass objects.

The Bad Thing About Gossip

The kitchen cupboard was so much fun yesterday that I decided to set these pears up and paint them.  Their body language has a lesson though.  Whenever you have gossip, someone is left feeling excluded and hurt.

Morning Glories on the Lam

One of my favourite parts of town, especially in the summer, is “The Flats”.  An old neighbourhood, established on a big river flat, it has so much charm and character. Probably because of the trapped heat and the rich river silt soil, it also has the most fabulous gardens.  This particular garden was so stuffed with flowers and veggies that the morning glories decided to make a break for it, and made their escape through the picket fence!

My Lovely Chair

My friend John Farnsworth has painted many quirky, interesting and odds & ends of chairs, so I decided that I should give that a whirl.
I had had the same old couch and chair for 30 years, so 2 christmasses ago my son bought me a beautiful leather living room suite.  This is the chair and automan, my favourite cushion, my Pendleton Blanket…..the only thing missing is Possum!

so there you go, my first chair portrait.

GMC for Sale

This cool old truck lives on the route I take to see my horse, and it never fails to entertain. Right now it’s virtually buried in snow, and makes a gorgeous picture that way as well.  I remember having a truck like this when I was just a little kid.  Anybody else out there that old?

The Big Chief, from Mountainview

This distinctive profile is that of “The Chief” mountain, in the far SW corner of Alberta, straddling the US border, and near Waterton and Glacier National Parks.  It is a holy place of the Peigan Tribe,  and a constant source of wonder for all of us.  So beautiful and ever-changing, depending on the light and the atmosphere.                                      SOLD
