Lift Off

This is a progression from yesterday’s painting and if you’ve ever watched pelican’s take off you’ll know what a lumbering, splashing, flapping affair that is!  It reminds me of the hulking Hercules airplane trying to get off the runway!
Once these American Pelicans are finally aloft though, you never saw such elegance and grace, and if they’re beautiful solo, they’re absolutely magnificent as they soar together in their squadron formations.

Launch-ready

“A rare old bird is a pelican”!  and this one wasn’t comfortable with our proximity, so had his wings at half mast, ready to embark on the laborious task of launching himself  airborne. Meanwhile I loved how he was lit up by the sun and so beautifully outlined by the shadowed shoreline.

CraZy Sunflower

Brace yourselves…my yard is full of sunflowers and I keep bringing them in the house, where I promptly fall in love with them.  I didn’t realize what a gem this one was till I sat down and really looked it it…he’s just a little guy, and my painting fails to convey how extraordinarily beautiful and wonky he is.  He has this wonderful blue and green center, surrounded by a gorgeous fuzzy fringe, and the petals seem to be all different lengths and go in haphazard directions; a true individual.  But aren’t we all. The great thing about painting is that it affords the painter an opportunity to really LOOK at things we might otherwise miss. I’m never disappointed.

Good Morning Crow

On the Thursday morning of the rodeo, I wandered over to the grounds to absorb the behind-the-chutes action. There was a “murder” of crows hanging around the bucking horses, raising hell and generally dominating the scene as only crows can do. This guy sat on the top rail and tried out his version of a stare-down with me. I won, and he left.

As always, it left me wondering about the secret life of crows and all other non-human species.

Emotion

Not saying what today’s painting is about…that would preclude you letting it do the talking!  So let me know what it says to you….I’ll be interested to hear.

My Summer Deck

My apologies to the followers of this blog, for I’m away from home and was unable to access the Internet last night. We got it figured out this morning so here’s your painting.

The weather here has been absolutely glorious, so  I painted out on my deck yesterday, and this was the scene; my little chimineya amongst the flowers and that famous brillian, bouncy Medicine Hat light that I love so much.  Enjoy your summer!

The Horseman

This little painting was a lot of work……but
I wanted to do it; there’s something irresistible about cowboy gear. What is it?….the extra long fringes of these chinks? the distinctive indigo blue of denim, which is the absolute compliment to the colour of the chaps? the silver conchos on his spurs? the horsehair macate? the sunshine and the dust? A lot of it is associated with the magic of being around horses, and the mere sight of all these things evokes a lifetime of pleasurable memories.  I’m just so glad there are young men & women today who continue to value the time honoured traditions of fine horsemanship.

Lillies and Light

The people in charge of our city parks here in Medicine Hat, have outdone themselves again this year.  The flower beds are just stunning, with colour combinations and varieties of flowers that just boggle my mind.  A display near my house features these tall, exotic lilies with brilliant orange flowers on tall spikes, and they’re surrounded with maroon, orange and green flowers and foliage.  What really caught my eye though, was the light coming through the big leathery leaves of the lilies, illuminating the brilliant colour scheme that mother nature has arranged for our pleasure.

Bruce’s Beautiful Broncs

My friend Bruce Flewelling is the stock contractor who supplies bucking horses to the Ranch Rodeo at Nanton….among lots of others.  What a lovely, fit-looking band of horses, with lots of roans (which are fun to paint because you can paint them pink and purple, blue and green.) But when it was time to buck, they nearly came unglued.  I think we’ll be seeing quite a few of them at the finals if they keep performing like that.

White Horse Series-#2

OK, I know this looks pretty simple, but I’m not happy with how much anatomical detail I got in the horse.  It’s like swimming upstream for me to NOT put in details like joints and muscles, dips and curves.  I’m trying for a very stylized horse, and I drew with a black ink pen; there was no erasing or going back. Sigh. Oh well, the painting part was lotsa fun.
