Morning Has Broken

This was the eastern sky on one of our fabulous mornings this past summer. One great thing about living on the prairie; there’s not much to spoil our view of the sky.

The Long View @ Longview

If you’ve never been down the Cowboy Trail, this won’t look familiar. This is the iconic Alberta scene that one sees over and over in our ads and promos of the province.  Prairie gives way to foothills, which rise up to towering Rockies. Nowhere is this transition more dramatic than at the aptly named “Longview”.  Just north of that little town there is this incredible depth-of-field which defies pen and paint, but I had to try anyway.  Those who haven’t been there, it’s time for a road trip!

Ponies @ Siksika

Often on my travels I like to cross the Blackfoot Reserve at Siksika.  The Bow River Valley is so pretty there, and there’s no interruption of the native landscape by crops or oil activity. Often there are bands of horses, which is a real bonus! For today’s painting I thought we needed some tipis as well.

Chain Lakes

This weekend was a celebration with my classmates of our graduation from nursing school many years ago (not saying how many!) We met in Banff and had 3 days of catching up and enjoying the last days of September in one of the most beautiful towns anywhere in the world.  I always like to check out the back roads, so today I took “The Cowboy Trail” from Turner Valley to Chain Lakes and then cut across country to home, gathering fabulous visuals and visits with even more friends. It took all day, so no painting….  Instead, this photo, taken about 25 miles west of Nanton,  of Chain Lakes and the Porcupine Hills stretching up to the Rockies.

Medalta Posey

A couple of weeks ago, my sister visited from Saskatchewan, and she & I went to visit our fabulous World Heritage Industrial Museum,  Medalta Potteries. She told me it was the highlight of her visit (never mind the teamroping her family were competing in!)
Disbursed about the site were these little bouquets in jam jars and this one happened to be sitting in a brilliant shaft of light from one of the many skylights in the old factory. I like to keep a sharp eye out for visual treats like this.

Ross Creek Sundown

OK this is 4 times the size of my dailies, but this is what you get today…the creek just below my house on a beautiful spring evening. There’s that magic prairie sky, sun  low on the horizon giving colours and contrast that just sings with life. Who says there’s nothing to look at on the prairie?

October Breezes

It’s that time of year! One golden, warm and best of all…windless day after another. Although winter isn’t my favourite, I’m glad to live in a place that enjoys the variety of the 4 seasons.

Over the Moon Kitty

Last night this crazy cat came in and sprawled on the rug at my feet in what I call her “Aren’t I pretty?” pose.  She looks like she’s flying, complete with a kink in her tail.  So I did a pen & ink sketch of her right then, and took a photo.  Today I re-did the sketch on watercolour paper and made her jump over the moon. That’s the great thing about being an artist…you can even make your cat do things she has no intention of doing!   SOLD

Mystic Bison

Recently I posted a photo of Porter’s buffalo which this “daily” is inspired by, but I wanted to add a little symbolism to suggest the power of these incredible animals.
The seven dots in the border represent the stars of the big dipper and the new moon is for possibilities. Representing the fragility of life and it’s beauty is the butterfly……..OR you can assign whatever meanings suggest themselves to you!

Ballet in June

A floral today, as we slide on towards winter.  My cousin gave me these beautiful oriental poppies a few years ago,  and for a short time in June, they’re a riot of fluttering, brilliant, luminous orange. They look like a troupe of ballerinas as they dip and sway with even the tiniest breeze. It was good to see them in my photo files this morning and to try and re-imagine them in paint.
