We’re Up Next

This painting was a treat to do! For one thing, it’s so great to paint large-scale after doing all the little “dailies” which are 5 X 7″.(This one is 30 X 20″ ). Another is that I really appreciate the bond between horse and rider, and I think that’s what was the driver for me to paint this at all.
Thirdly, I enjoyed painting all the gear;  leather & silver, rawhide and horsehair, straw and denim.  Such rich textures with rich history.
Not sure it’s finished. Should I lay in a big of sky behind?  Am sitting with it for now.

We’re Up Next-beginning stages

This is a piece I’ve been working on all week.  It’s large…30″ X 20″ and it’s been a challenge to draw.  However, we’re off and running now!
This was from a photo I took at the Ranch Horse Competition this summer, and I loved the body language of both cowboy and horse.  Though they are still, you can feel the intensity of the horseman as they wait their turn.  The horse though, seems to be saying “We’ll be fine man; just chill!”
Will post the finished product when it’s ready.

Side Trip

Last week my parents came to stay, and since my dad grew up in the Cypress Hills, he loves to go for a drive out there.  So we did, and it was a golden fall day with the exquisite clear light we’re so blessed with in October (if it’s not snowing!!)
We took a side trip across from north of Elkwater, east to Eagle Butte  on our way home, and there was one stunning hillside after another.  This was one of them. Good thing we went when we did; it looks quite different this week!

Stare Down at Breakfast

This crazy cat has cabin fever! Her first trip into our new winter season was this morning, and she freaked! If I hadn’t opened the door, she’d have left a Wily Coyote style hole in it on her way through!  So she stalks me, she spends time glaring out the window. . She chases her toys, and then when she goes missing, I’ll find a big lump under the covers in my bed!! This is the stare down I got while making breakfast this morning. It might be a long winter.

Alley off of Canyon Road

Canyon Road in Santa Fe, the “City Different”,  is a quaint 250year old street which is now home to many beautiful art galleries.  This is an alley which opens up to Canyon Road, and shows the gorgeous old adobe buildings so typical of the area.  On the far right you can see the exposed handmade bricks of a wall from which the adobe mud has eroded.
This is such an organic and eco-friendly building style, I often wonder why it isn’t adopted on a larger scale.

Teapot Sill Life

When we were young and working in Calgary, my sister and I lived together. This  teapot was a birthday gift she gave to me at that time.  Now 30 years later it is still my favourite teapot, used for special occasions.  This week, I had company who brought these flowers.  We had tea, and I’d bought groceries, thus the avocado on the cupboard.  All these events coincided in a “found still life” on my kitchen cupboard.

In His Shoes 7

Today’s offering; another of my son’s shoes. Thankfully he’s safe & sound on Canadian soil, and going about his challenging and interesting life. But his shoes kicking about the place make me smile. This is one of his many pairs of “chucks”….the many pairs being necessary in order that every outfit have just the right colour and style of shoe! This is the guy who loves “gear” of any kind and that has always started with his foot gear.

Barn @ Echodale

I spent a beautiful morning painting on the hillside above the buildings at Echodale this summer.  What a lovely old white barn, of the style built around here about 100 years ago.  There are still quite a few of these around the countryside, but not many are as well-preserved as this one.  The spectacular setting of the S. Saskatchewan River valley doesn’t hurt either.

Tomato Season

We had our first really hard frost last night, and considering the date, that’s pretty generous of Mother Nature.  Her other recent gift was the fabulous tomato crop we had this year, the last of the fresh ones going into a batch of cabbage rolls for supper last night.
Time and the seasons march on, changes are guaranteed to happen. I guess our job is to rise to each occasion.

A Pup for Everyone

A few weeks ago, friends showed up at the horse sale in Maple Creek with seven red and blue heeler pups!  They were the most adorable pups in the world and at the cutest possible wiggly fat stage of puppy-dom.  And seven of them!!  Needless to say, the kids (who were pretty darn adorable themselves) were in heaven; there was no fighting or tears because….there was a pup for everyone.
