Toy Story III
I wonder if when I’m away or out of the house, if these toys come to life and have on-going dramas and adventures-maybe even a romance or two. Probably not; Possum would undoubtedly put a swift end to any such nonsense. It wouldn’t be pretty.

Toy Story II
More “characters” from the top shelf of my book case. With Christmas approaching, this kind of subject matter seems appropriate.

Toy Story I
I have a very special bookshelf, made by a local artist out of Diamond Willow, and it is loaded with many of my favourite “reads” of all time. The top shelf however, is devoted to an assortment of “toys” that have come to reside with me over the years. Mostly these are gifts, some (the wooden zebra and the handmade Melissa Weiss bear) I bought for myself. My theory is that it’s important to own and celebrate our inner child. Wouldn’t you agree?

Jeremy Fisher
I have 2 brilliant and talented sisters, both of whom are teachers. This painting is from the home of my sister Kath, who, as a teacher-librarian in the elementary school system, has spent her life sourcing wonderful books for children, and promoting literacy. Her home is full of collectibles, including many beautiful children’s books, old and new. Beatrix Potter is of course, an icon. One time when we were holidaying in Jasper, she found this wonderful Jeremy Fisher doll, and he has graced the table in her family room ever since.

Nursery Bear
Is there anything in the world more heavenly than a baby-fragrant nursery, dimmed against the afternoons sun, with a sleeping baby in the crib? This bear has been in our family since my son was little, and he evokes those memories for me. Have you got a favourite toy left over from your kids?

The Toys in the Hood
On a recent visit to my sister’s home, I came across this “Found Still Life” of her kids toys. Both of my sister’s are very talented, and this particular sister excels at children’s literature, and in her abilities to create a world of magic around all that for the kids in our family, my own included.. Many of their toys, she made herself.
Now our kids are grown; they are teachers, doctors, musicians and soldiers, and their discarded toys are poignant reminder of how fleeting their childhoods were, and an awareness of what amazing adults they have become.
