Under A Winter Moon

Under a Winter MoonWe recently had another fabulous full moon, and I simultaneously came across a photo I’d taken of the tipis at our annual Aboriginal Days celebration.  I woke up this morning with the notion of combining the 2 ideas….probably partly inspired by  the long dark nights and the attraction that brings to fire and heavenly bodies.

Ponies @ Siksika

Often on my travels I like to cross the Blackfoot Reserve at Siksika.  The Bow River Valley is so pretty there, and there’s no interruption of the native landscape by crops or oil activity. Often there are bands of horses, which is a real bonus! For today’s painting I thought we needed some tipis as well.

Buffalo Star Tipi

When I was in Calgary in July showing my work at the Hyatt Hotel, part of their extensive Canadian art collection were some historical photos.  This little painting is derived from a sepia-toned early 1800’s vintage photo of a Pikani tipi, depicting a beautiful example of gorgeous design and elegant function.

Sky Ribbon Tipi

This is the weekend for Aboriginal Day Celebrations here in Canada, and though I didn’t get to any of the festivities this year, I did paint a tipi to honour the day and show some of the respect I feel for this country’s First People.

Full Moon Rising Tipi

Today, I just felt like it was time for another tipi painting.  Haven’t done one in ages, and with that big moon coming over the horizon these evenings,I ws inspired to combine the two with a little exaggeration thrown in for effect!

Blue Sky Tipis

Here we go…Tipis again!  I adore tips, but you already know that.
In this painting, the poles seem to hold up the sky. Such exquisitely beautiful dwellings!

Winter Sunset Camp

I’ve always had a “thing” for tipis, and wonder if maybe I lived in one in a former life.  They are about the only thing I ever paint from my imagination…that is, not from my own personal experience.  This is an example of that……purely imaginary, and thus the fanciful colours and design. Please forgive any historical or cultural inaccuracies!

Aboriginal Day

Tuesday, June 21st was National Aboriginal Day in Canada.  I’ve been watching our local native people set up tipis in a park here in Medicine Hat this week; I went and hung out a bit and took some photos.  I’ve always loved tipis; the shape, their profile against the sky, and the gorgeous designs.  Looking forward to tomorrow when  there’ll be  some festivities.  I think I’ll go and check it out.
