White Horse Series-#1

I’ve been playing around in series again, experimenting with abstraction.  This, the first in the series is pretty much my usual M.O wherein the horse has to be anatomically correct and things pretty much representational.  I let myself go wild with the sky and put on a funky border.  We’ll see what I can come up with tomorrow.

From Point A to Point B

One of my favourite daily pursuits is a walk in nature…the prairie, obviously, since I live where I do.  It’s especially delightful from April till September when the meadowlarks are here, intriguing little chiggers that they are.  Everything they do is endearing…like the way they fling themselves into the air and bee-line from fencepost to sagebrush clump……accomplishing what we’re not exactly sure.

Summer Skies at Last

One thing you can say about all the dramatic weather we’ve been getting, the skies have been even more incredible than usual…and not in a good way.  So when these beautiful summer clouds show up it is such a delight. The landscape here (what there is of it) is the coulee that I’m so lucky to live on and the blue on the horizon, the Cypress Hills.
Have a great holiday weekend, and don’t look for me tomorrow; I’ll be camping out of computer and cell phone range.  Summer in Canada!!

Sky Ribbon Tipi

This is the weekend for Aboriginal Day Celebrations here in Canada, and though I didn’t get to any of the festivities this year, I did paint a tipi to honour the day and show some of the respect I feel for this country’s First People.

The Wind_ painting stage

I dithered quite awhile; looking at photos of wild skies and at the gloomy, heavy sky outside my windows!  Finally had to get at it.  I found a 2″ flat brush and started in with the orange and yellow across the mid sky, and dragged purple and blue in below that, down through the horses, to the horizon. Fun…and stressful! Banged in some grass while it was damp so that the horizon wouldn’t have too many hard edges.

Now for the big racing black cloud overhead.  I slopped in a ton of paint, and then I mixed green and poured it over top and let it run.  Then orange along the bottom edge, and flung in with my brush.  Yikers. I think I’m ruining it, but we won’t know till it’s finished, will we.

When the Wind Gets Up- Drawing Stage

I’m working on a new 16 X 20 piece, and here’s where we’re at with it.  I was out at my friend’s ranch, painting the river cliffs, and their horses ran along side my truck on the way in.  The sky that day was flat and grey, so I need a different sky.  I drew the horses and decided on the horizon line, and then covered the horses with masking tape so that I can slop paint across behind them and not paint  them out!  I want  a really wild sky and have been agonizing over what that should look like; scared I”ll wreck a nice drawing.  Today I procrastinated, had 2 batches of company and then went to work, so I managed to avoid a decision so far. We’ll see how I do tomorrow.

Sky Train

We’re right on the main line of the CPR here in the Hat, and trains are pretty important in this sprawling country full of natural resources and agricultural products.  It’s such a treat to see a big long train spanning miles and miles of prairie, yet still dwarfed by the immense sky.

Icon

Does anyone else feel absolutely distressed and offended by the gargantuan power lines they’re installing across the prairies, or is it just me?  Maybe everybody felt that way when these ones went up about 75 years ago.  Maybe not though; everyone was probably pretty excited at the idea of electricity.  And now these old poles are so much a part of every landscape that we’re oblivious to them.
It’ll be a frosty day you-know-where when we’re blind to the monstrosities that are going up now….or maybe they won’t show up much amongst all the other sprawl and corruption we’ll have created by then.

Serenade of the Sweetgrass

One ranch belonging to part of the extended family lies right on “The Medicine Line”…the border between Alberta and Montana, and this is their view of the Sweetgrass Hills at sunset.  In the foreground is the sagebrush dotted horse pasture…….. and there’s a whole lot of miles between the two!
I like a country where a person can get a look at the view.

Rocks & Trees

Today’s offering might be on the verge of abstract.   Often when on the phone or in a meeting,  I doodle fir trees and rocks.  My parents, while raising us on the prairie, made a concerted effort to get us to the mountains every summer. As Canadians I think that rocks and trees are part of our national psyche; after all, they constitute the landscape of probably 3/4 of this beautiful country.
