Sunbathed

Today’s painting is larger than the usual, and was just so much fun to paint.  My favourite subject and the prettiest light.  We didn’t get much of that here today …lots of liquid sunshine!  I’m so lucky; that meant I got to spend most of the day in my studio.  Hope you all made good use of the rainy day as well,

Painted Pretty Steer

This guy is a retired roping steer that friends of mine have kept around just because he’s so darned easy on the eyes. I’ve painted him before, but with my new commitment to abstraction, I decided to try him again.  He’s already pink and purple, orange and green; all I had to do is push that a bit.  The attitude was a freebie.         SOLD

Broncs, Dust & Light

Well this makes day 2 with no painting, and I’m going through withdrawal!! Tomorrow doesn’t look a whole lot better.  SUCH a busy week, and I have new plans to show my work at Calgary during the last week of Stampede, at the Hyatt Hotel downtown, so am scrambling to get my work ready for that. It’ll be fun and exciting.
In honour of that, here’s a photo from a day at Stampede Ranch last fall, with  cowboy, Cole Neely.

Portrait of Painted Smile

I’ve painted this famous mare before, and am always amused by her dozy and laid back demeanour…when she’s “off duty”.  Look out though when the chute gate is cracked and it’s time to buck.  Conniption doesn’t begin to describe it!  She’s getting old now though and will probably retire to a big pasture on the Milk River Ridge, so pay attention if you get to see her perform this summer.

Drawing

All I got done today is this drawing….you saw a crazy version of this a couple of weeks ago (“Three’s Company”) which I coloured with felt pens. I liked the composition and the idea of the magpie in there, but I wasn’t happy with the felt pen treatment. This time Ill be painting this in my usual fashion.  Can’t wait. Stay tuned.
p.s. Is it just me, or are magpies not the coolest dudes?!

Relaxed & Alert 3

Well,  here’s the 3rd in this series…I tried to do the drawing without lifting my charcoal from the paper and with less attachment to results.  It still is representational though. And it still looks like my work. I’m not much of a success at this abstraction, but I do sort of like the loosey-goosiness of this.

Relaxed & Alert

Trust horses to be capable of relaxation while staying alert!
This is #2 in a series of the same subject.  The first one was done in my usual manner with the usual result.  I then did this fairly quick pen & ink drawing of the same 3 horses, and slopped in the paint, trying to be spontaneous and quick.   I think I like it better than the first.  Tomorrow I’ll show you the 5 minute charcoal drawing with even sketchier painting methods.

Bald Face Bronc

I’ve recently been challenged to try and do some abstract pieces.  Turns out that’s a bit of a stretch for me.
One way to do that I thought,  is to zero in really close on a subject and the result would be an abstract. Apparently not.  So I’ll keep working on this and keep you posted.

Two for the Show

Today’s piece is another demo from the workshop on the weekend. Everybody knows that horses are my “deal”,  and I’m usually asked to show how I approach painting them in watercolour. Really though, subject matter doesn’t  matter; the principles are the same whether it’s landscapes, flowers or horses.  The important thing is that we feel connected to our subject.

Elevens-ies

And here it is, finished.  The big guy in the bottom right hand corner nearly did me in.  He’s almost life size, and there seemed to be a lot of acreage in that big jaw of his!

I hope you feel the intimacy here that I felt when painting this…I could feel their alert restlessness and the ever-readiness for flight.
