The Prince of Wales

While we’re in Waterton, may as well check out the P.O.W, truly one of my favourite sights.  Built in 1927 by the Great Northern Railway, it is like taking a quick trip to the European Alps.  With it’s soaring roofs, gables, balconies and stunning view of Waterton Lake, it is a treat not to be missed.
This is us looking at it from “The International” out on the lake.  Oh, and if you’re up for tea in the afternoon?  Every day from 2 till 5.

Waterton Vista

This is the view of Waterton, looking  from north to south, towards Glacier Park in Montana, with Blackiston Creek in the foreground. The implausibly craggy peaks on the right, tower over the Upper Waterton Lake, and presided over my niece’s recent wedding.
The official name of the park is “The Waterton/Glacier International Peace Park” and I have to say that just being there brings a definite feeling of peace.

Longview Aspen

Here’s a landscape from the trail ride last weekend.  Our hosts had a 2 room log cabin in an aspen grove, looking out towards Holy Cross Mountain and Mount Armstrong, with the variable elevations of foothills in between.  Aspens are my favourite of all trees.  When seen from a distance we think their trunks are white, but actually, they’re very colourful, especially with all the black inclusions that are so typical. Put yourself here; remember the sound of the wind in their quaking leaves.

Waterton Peaks

Having been raised in the arid southeast part of Alberta, I’m pretty much a prairie girl.  We did get to the mountains every summer when we were kids though….as long as it rained we could stay gone from home, because Dad couldn’t hay!  Sometimes we went to Waterton, and it still holds a special place in all of our hearts.  Looks like the next generation feels the same, and thus the family wedding there last week.
Here’s the mountain peak that hangs over the townsite; a little slice of Waterton to all of you, from me.

Rocky Mountain Romance

The daily painting gig has taken quite a hit this week due to travel, and health challenges and other assorted adventures.  Tonight I’m offering up a photo taken just this evening from the jetty at beautiful Waterton International Peace Park, in the far SW corner of Alberta and stretching into Montana, where it becomes Glacier Park.

There’s a clan gathering; one of my precious nieces is getting married here tomorrow, at the edge of the lake. even the landscape is “in the mood for love” Why else would that little cloud be so gently kissing the mountain peak?

Longview chinook arch

Here’s that magical front range of the rockies again, from my recent trip to Black Diamond, Longview, and High River. This was just north of Longview, and exemplifies the stunning layers of sky, rock, foothills and plains that have become iconic images of Alberta.  And no wonder….sooooo beautiful.

Canola Fields in Bloom

It is astonishing to me how different the landscape, weather and agrology are if I drive a mere 2 or 3 hours west.  The canola fields are in full, eye-popping bloom here in Alberta, and this one was just a few miles east of High River, so there’s the added bonus of the mountains on the horizon.  Then for icing on the cake, a Chinook Arch!  I just love a road trip.

Summer on the S. Saskatchewan

The South Saskatchewan River on a lazy summer day is always a sight for sore eyes. Though we’re 300 miles from it’s glacial source the water still carries hints of it’s original turquoise colour.

At the present, as the spring melt comes down from the Rockies,  this is NOT how this river looks.  Instead it is a raging  torrent, threatening it’s banks, and is the colour of cafe latte. Each season has it’s challenges and blessings.

Brooding Skies over the Bow

Here’s the landscape I grew up with.  Small wonder I’m a prairie person to the bone.  This is the Bow River, from a vantage point above our winter field. The sweeping bends form big river flats on one side and high cut banks on the other, alternating sides as it snakes across the plains. As you stand here, feel the stiff breeze and smell the rain coming in.

Yamnuska Spring

My good friends live right at the foot of Yamnuska (Wall of Stone) which is the very first mountain to rise above the foothillls, just north of highway 1 at Kananaskis.

All my life I’d noticed that unique mountain and marvelled at the sight of it.  Having gotten to know my friends Kevin and Janet, I’ve been lucky enough to visit right beneath it’s shelter. What a magnificent place to live and  have your horse  pasture.
