Hens @ Dorothy

The last time I was through the little hamlet of Dorothy on the Red Deer River, I found this little clutch of red hens, free-ranging it out amongst the sagebrush.  When I find scenes like this, I get that powerful nostalgic feeling that hankers for an older, simpler time. Meanwhile, I’m checking my smartphone to see if I have any emails.

Serenade of the Sweetgrass

One ranch belonging to part of the extended family lies right on “The Medicine Line”…the border between Alberta and Montana, and this is their view of the Sweetgrass Hills at sunset.  In the foreground is the sagebrush dotted horse pasture…….. and there’s a whole lot of miles between the two!
I like a country where a person can get a look at the view.

Bully For You!

This guy was standing beside the road over in Saskatchewan one day.  He sure thinks he’s pretty, and I guess we’ll all agree.  I used a little of my abstract tactics with this one…giving cartoon edges jumping up the colour with the felt pens. Why not!?

Along the Hoodoo Trail 2

Fond remembrances of the colourful and dramatic landscape of the Red Deer River valley near Drumheller. We have such beautiful wild rivers in Alberta and each one has  badlands, spectacular deep valleys, or gentle wooded flats. Some have all of these.  Get out this summer and spend some time in the company of one of our rivers.

You Know you’re a Redneck……

And this is a northern redneck!  The Redneck Grebe is native to Canada and Alaska, nesting in the spring near small ponds and sloughs.  I’d never seen one before, but this guy was hanging out, brilliant in his mating plumage, at the Kerrywood Nature Centre in Red Deer last week.  An excellent swimmer and diver, you can see how far back his legs are positioned…like a merganser or a loon. I’ll be watching for more of these guys.

Newly Minted Aspen

Have you ever stopped to enjoy the electric, neon lime green colour of brand new aspen leaves?  While in central Alberta last week, I had lots of opportunity to revel  in that sight.  It’s especially noticable against the black-by-comparison spruce and pine the aspen is interspersed with in that neck of the woods. And then there’s the magical white-and-black trunks. I find that there are some colours paint just can’t fully convey.
Next time you get a chance, hug an Aspen

Sunrise Pronghorn

Precious to me is our Pronghorn,  I think  because they’ve been part of my life since I can remember.
I so admire their determination to persevere despite the fact that they’re ill equipped for our winters, or for the constant encroachment by development, on their habitat and migratory paths.
This little painting suggests that speaking for myself,  the sun rises and sets on them.

Cowboy @ Quilchena

We haven’t had a cowboy for awhile, and that just won’t do!
This competent young man works at Quilchena Ranch near Merritt B.C. and I met him when visiting there last year.  The flat hat and brush cuffs are typical of the buckaroo style of ranch cowboy which has migrated up from Mexico from the Vaquero tradition. Cowboy fashion has a lot to do with region and the type of work involved. And then there’s individual flair of which the cowboys I know have a huge abundance!

Soon

Soon now…within the next month anyway, the aspens in the Cypress Hills will unfurl their exquisite coin-shaped leaves and set about the business of quaking in the breezes.  Nature is so incredible…every species of plant and animal has it’s distinctive characteristics, yet each individual is one-of-a-kind. This clump of aspen is just one
example of that small truth.

Tompkins Truck

I came across this old grain truck in a field near Tompkins Saskatchewan 25 years ago, and every time I go through there, I wonder if it’s still there. Saskatchewan has it’s share of rusting old trucks, but they’re slowly being snapped up by collectors. One day I recognised one of my favourites going down the highway on a flatbed!  So who knows where this Tompkins Truck could be by now.
