Fort Walsh October

Fort Walsh in Cypress Interprovincial Park was the site of the first NWMP post and the pivotal point for law and order during the taming of our Canadian west.  In those days, this was a hive of activity, with the likes of the whiskey trader, settlers, and refugees from the American “Indian Wars” playing out their dramas.

These days, it’s a tranquil and naturally  beautiful place to visit.

Up Spray Lakes Road

Well,  I’m back to the flat lands and back to my Wifi connection after an absolutely lovely w/e in the mountains.  I was pretty busy fooling around, but I did get a couple of small Pleine Aires done.
Saturday was socked in and grey, with a Chinook moving in, thankfully warming things up.  I found an open meadow part way up the Spray Lakes road, and sat in my car to do this little piece (it was still -20!)  The sun came out today though, and I’ll undoubtedly try and do this same mountain lit up with sunshine.

Thanksgiving Turkey Trot

While most of you were preparing your Thanksgiving turkey, I was painting mine! It was a happy surprise to see these  wild (Merriam’s) turkeys out at Elkwater yesterday; we thought maybe the increased cougar population would be the end of them.  However, evidently they’re pretty wily….. and oh SO beautiful.

One thing I’m always thankful for is wildlife and wild places.  May we mindfully protect them both.

Big Sky Cows

On our way to Elkwater the other day, here were these comical and curious cows, grazing on the hillside, blissfully unaware that winter is on it’s way.  It was one of those hot,  chinooky fall days that will lull us all, cows included, into a sense of well-being.  As it turns out, that was probably the last hot day of 2011.  Glad I spent it well.

Top of the Bull Trail

Today’s offering is another salute to the beautiful fall weather from my foray out to the hills this week.  It’s so beautiful day after day, and we’re all enjoying every minute.  We know what’s coming! I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend.

Bull Trail Aspen

I spent yesterday afternoon out in the Cypress Hills, and this is one of the little Plein Air paintings I did.  It’s such fun to paint out in the landscape even if the wind blows your easel over, and flies wade around in the paint (they like the honey in my Graham paints).  There’s an immediacy in my work that I don’t get any other way. And the bonus is that time spent outside in a beautiful place.

Cypress Hills Autumn

It’s that time of year again, and my favourite trees are cloaking themselves in gold. TIme to get out and paint on location.  it’s nearly the end of September and we haven’t even had a frost yet, so there’s still time!  I’m off to the Hills tomorrow.  How about you?

Looking Up

You know those glorious fall days, when the sun is hot, the air is sweet with the smell of curing leaves, and you know there are maybe only one or two days like this left before winter sets in.  The only thing to do on a day like this, is to lie down on a bed of leaves and gaze at the trees and the sky, and be grateful for where you live and the freedom that you enjoy.

Up on the Bench

The Cypress Hills. located in SE Alberta & SW Saskatchewan, were  created when the last glaciers slid around them, instead of grinding them down with the rest of the countryside.  They now remain as the highest point between the great Lakes and the Rockies.

This painting is of the plateau at the top of the hills, known by all of us as “The Bench”.  The dramatic sky is typical…the natives didn’t call these “The Thunder-Breeding Hills” for nothing! Besides dramatic weather, these hills boast 220 bird species, countless rare wildflowers and incredible wildlife.

There’s magic in them there hills!

Aspens on the Bull Trail

My favourite tree in the world is the “Quaking Aspen”….named that for the way their leaves tremble in the breeze.  I love that about them, and their beautiful light trunks with distinctive black markings.   They live in clumps, which are actually all one entity.  There’s a grove of Aspens in Colorado which is believed to be the largest living being on the planet.

This bunch lives at the top of the Bull Trail in the Cypress Hills, near the gate to the ranch where my dad was raised. It’s one of my favourite places to paint on location.
