Holding up the Sky

Today you get a photo….this from my road trip last week. The old elevator at Dorothy, which I’ve painted for this blog already, has such grace and  “presence” standing alone beside the road on the sagebrush dotted river flat….right where it’s been standing for probably a century.

The colours were so great this day; such soft light and the way the silvery sky blends into the old silvery wood just seems so….elegant.

Bridle Trio

So this is a little “quickie” I did in my booth today, from one of my friend Kim Taylor’s fabulous photos, hanging on the wall of HER booth across from me.  Only thing is I had about 40 interruptions, and it shows in the higglety pigglety lines and wishy-wash colour.  But it’s all you get for today!

Ranchos Christmas

Ranchos de Taos Church, again.  This is the third time I’ve painted this landmark for my blog.  Soon the most photgraphed church in N. America will also be the most painted.  There’s nothing like the brilliant clear light of Northern New Mexico on ancient adobe walls

Embudo Station Skull

Today’s painting is from one of my favourite haunts in New Mexico,”The Classical Gas Museum”, which is located along side the Rio Grande River, between Santa Fe and Taos.  I’ve painted the gas pump collection there many times…several are included in this blog.

So when my friend Courtney was through there in August, I urged her to check it out.  She liked it as much as I do, and her photos are stunning.  You can see them on her blog….listed below in ” blogs that I follow”, or go to www.courtneytoddphotography.com.

Rocky Mountain Romance

The daily painting gig has taken quite a hit this week due to travel, and health challenges and other assorted adventures.  Tonight I’m offering up a photo taken just this evening from the jetty at beautiful Waterton International Peace Park, in the far SW corner of Alberta and stretching into Montana, where it becomes Glacier Park.

There’s a clan gathering; one of my precious nieces is getting married here tomorrow, at the edge of the lake. even the landscape is “in the mood for love” Why else would that little cloud be so gently kissing the mountain peak?

Weekend Wanderings

Instead of a painting, am offering 2 photos, with apologies.  Spent the weekend in Nanton, High River, Black Diamond and points in between.  And there was absolutely no time to paint.  I did get some neat photos though, and will be attempting to paint from them for future posts.

Here are the Nanton elevators….still standing and still looking like all the elevators in all the small prairie towns did 25 years ago.

The reason I was there, was for the Ranch Rodeo, and was it ever awesome.  Ranches from B.C., Alberta, and Saskatchewan enter teams and they compete against each other in events that closely relate to actual ranch work, like doctoring and milking a ranch cow (now THAT can get western!), and there’s a big emphasis on gear and horsemanship.  It’s a real family affair,as the photo shows.  If you ever get a chance, get yourself to a ranch rodeo.

War Dance

OK please forgive me just one more photograph. Some things just are better as photographs…how could a painting ever do this justice? and I wanted to share it with all of you. (Having said that, I probably will attempt to paint some of the images from today.)
I went to the Aboriginal Day Celebrations today and it was just SO beautiful. My eyes were dazzled with the outfits and the grace of the dancers, my toes bounced with the rhythm of the drums.   This extraordinary young man is from the Piegan Tribe in the SW corner of the province, and he’s doing the Traditional War Dance….a visual feast.

Oh, and I did do my painting today; look to see it tomorrow.

Branding

So I’ve been MIA!  I went to a branding, and fell off the edge of the earth…the cyber-earth at least.  No cell phone reception, no Wifi, and thus, no blogging!

It was a great time though, with very good friends &  wonderful family.  Lots of work got done, and many laughs were had.  And though I DID get my painting done, I thought that for today I’d share a photo instead.  We had very little sun today, but it came out briefly, and I caught this silhouette in a  halo of smoke.
