Forgotten

When my Aunt relocated to a new farm yard, this relic of that farm’s early days was left out in the pasture below the corrals.  Unlike today’s fiber glass and plastic vehicles, this one will gradually return to the earth from which it was made. Unless someone comes along and restores it.

Again, I used only my flat brush for this one.  Can you tell?  It’s really fun and I think I’m less inclined to “over work”.

Tompkins Truck

I came across this old grain truck in a field near Tompkins Saskatchewan 25 years ago, and every time I go through there, I wonder if it’s still there. Saskatchewan has it’s share of rusting old trucks, but they’re slowly being snapped up by collectors. One day I recognised one of my favourites going down the highway on a flatbed!  So who knows where this Tompkins Truck could be by now.

Saskatchewan Feed Truck

You’ll be wondering which province I’m in! I did this quick little piece in my booth at the trade show today, from my trip to Saskatchewan a couple of weeks ago.  This gnarly old feed truck was sitting in a yard beside the road into my sister’s ranch, and I just liked the look of it; so competent and rugged, just like many of the people there.

Little Ol’ Truck

This Little Ol’ Truck showed up at the Bassano Homecoming this summer, along with a lot of other neat old jalopies, cars, tractors and such.  I can’t remember what this truck was; maybe some of you know.  It’s nothing I’d ever heard of before, and so cute I had to paint it.

Off to Town

I thought I’d try my hand at cartooning; using the work of my friends Ben Crane and Ash Cooper as inspiration, this is what I came up with today.  It was a lot of fun….once I got the darn truck drawn. It has a lot of my favourite things in it; gravel roads, dogs, old trucks, cowboy hats, and road trips!! However, I think Ben’s and Ash’s jobs are safe!

Pumps @ Embudo Station

One of the most interesting places to stop in at when you find yourself in New Mexico, is “The Classical Gas Museum”. It’s located north of Santa Fe, halfway to Taos on the main highway. The fellow who owns the place has a fondness for old gas station memorabilia…..which I happen to share!  Check out this row of  pumps standing in the New Mexico sunshine, lookng for all the world like a row of people waiting for a parade!

Mossleigh Truck

Mossleigh is a tiny town, a hamlet really, somewhere between the Siksika Reserve and Okotoks.  The other day on the way through there, I came across a NEW old truck!  This guy was probably very important…look at all that he could haul with these racks on the back.  I’ve no idea of the make or year, but I bet some of you do.  Please let me know if you do.
It was such a pretty day, with the canold fields just coming into bloom; bet this little ol’ truck has seen many such days in his lifetime. Don’t you wish he could talk?

Montana Bar

When my son was young, he & I took a road trip across the wilds of Montana.  We crossed the mighty Missouri River on a back road, and climbed the fantastic river breaks, and when we came out on top, somewhere in the middle of nowhere, heading to Lewistown, we came across this “wide spot in the road”.  It was right at dusk, and trying to rain.  We hadn’t seen a town all day; scarcely a ranch, so this little jewel of a bar (amongst a few scattered houses) looked pretty intriguing. Most Montana Bars are, but I think this one is especially so.

Ravenscraig Truck

This old truck, with barely visible paint on the door, “L. Hansen, Orkney, Sask” was probably state-of-the-art in it’s day.  Who was L. Hansen, and where is Orkney?  What did this old boy haul? Did L. Hansen have a family, and if so, is my friend Sid a descendant?  If old timers like this could talk, what stories they’d have to tell!
As for now, he’s rusting away on the edge of a pretty coulee north of the Cypress Hills, at Ravenscraig.

As for “Where’s Ravenscraig?”, that’s a story for another day.

The Garage, Dorothy

We’ve visited the tiny ghost town of Dorothy before on this blog (mid-January).  This painting is of the old garage, with a “dead” car abandoned outside.  It was almost dusk, and the place seemed to whisper to me, the buildings watching my every move. One of my  favourite pass-times, time travel, is very easy when I’m in Dorothy at dusk.
