Parade Day

Oh how I love painting these guys! How about this beautiful young face…and then there’s the regalia;  the designs an absolute delight for the soul. Thankfully many of the old outfits have been saved and some of the young women from the Blood Tribe (and undoubtedly others as well) are painstakingly relearning the design and beading techniques.
Probably, now that Calgary Stampede is over, this young guy has his basball cap, wranglers and a t-shirt back on, but at least he was generous enough to share this version of his history with all of us.

Heirloom Chaps

This is the detail on one of the pairs of beautiful old chaps handed down to my friend Janet from her grandparent’s generation. The Brewsters are an institution in the   guiding and mountaineering of our National Parks here in Alberta, and these chaps are just a sample of the historical treasures that their family preserves.   SOLD

Sun Ponies

Maybe abstract isn’t the word….these latest paintings seem to have a lot of symbolism, and though they’re not rendered in my usual realistic style, the elements are fully recognisable. These ponies make me think of the ancient cave paintings we saw when I was in France….they were so much fun to draw and easy!  “A working artist is a playing artist”…right?!

Bouquet of Feathers

Funny the things we collect.  For some reason I can’t resist rocks and feathers, and have been picking up interesting specimens of both all my life.  The other day, when cleaning out my studio so it could resume it’s role as “dining room”  I took a moment to stop and appreciate the beautful found still life that my collection of feathers makes against the red walls.

Ahhhhhh, I am so easily entertained.

Kitchen Angels

There are a lot of angels around this house, especially at Christmas time. These two however, are on my kitchen wall all year around (these ones don’t sing as loud as yesterday’s crowd).
The big one on the left, made of barnwood and with wire hair,  I purchased in Santa Fe about 10 years ago. The smaller one with the wings made of old quilts, was given to me by a lifelong friend..

Looking around though, I think I maybe should’ve started painting my angles a week earlier. There are still quite a few to go.

The First Noel

My good friend Sharon made these darling choir girls for me a couple of years ago. Their heads are made of cloth and plaster, their hair from Kurly Kates. The middle one sports a sprinkling of freckles across her nose.  They’re glad to be on the cupboard in the living room, having been relegated to the spare bedroom for most of the year. Well really, what would you do… “The First Noel” gets a little old by the middle of January!

Heart Throb Kitty

You’re getting more critters from my house.  This December series has made me aware of all the “toys” I have here.  I truly enjoy all these treasures, and notice them every day.  I think the creativity that made them gives me a boost, and it’s fun to honour that by painting them.

This is a tree ornament that I leave out all year because it’s so funky and adorable. It’s about 3″ high, and  is 3 dimensional, made of tin. Stay tuned; there’s lots more where this came from.

Family Dispute

How about these characters?  They inhabit a beautiful artisans shelf in my living room.  Given to me by my dear cousin, they’re truly works of art.  Made by a local woman out of gourds that she grows herself, they’re over a foot tall, magnificently carved, painted and befeathered. To me they look like tribal people…He’s the chief, and his little wife is not nearly as impressed with him as he is with himself.  She’s taken the time out today to lay out her opinion of him. I told you there are dramas going on in this house!

Toy Story III

Further into my book case toy collection, here’s my froggie in a pinafore.  Who doesn’t need one of those?

I wonder if when I’m away or out of the house, if these toys come to life and have on-going dramas and adventures-maybe even a romance or twoProbably not; Possum would undoubtedly put a swift end to any such nonsense. It wouldn’t be pretty.
