Traditional Dancer

Painting size 5 X 7″
This extraordinary young man was one of the dancers at our Aboriginal Day celebrations last summer here in The Hat.  There’s something very powerful about the drumming and dancing of the plains tribes, and this guy was one of the most colourful.

Jingle Dancer 2

Early in the year, I did a version of this young jingle dancer.  I did a closer in painting of her face as a demonstration in class this week, which I think is fresher than the original.  Maybe I’m learning a thing or two with doing the dailies! Hopefully, eh?

Indian Market Blues

Here I was this morning, so boo-hooing about missing Indian Market in Santa Fe on the w/e.  I was sitting in my “drawing chair” in my living room and looked up to “notice” this little found still life on my glass-top table!  There’s my little drum from  the Taos Pueblo, and a sweet Kachina I bought one night in the diner on the plaza in Santa Fe, when John Farnsworth and I were out for dinner. As well, there’s a bronze buffalo skull, decidedly Canadian, by our own Mack Mackenzie, and a little Zapotec rug I’ve had for years.  So this is my homage to Indian Market.  And yes Thea, next year I think I must be there.

Jingle Dancing

I am  seriously bent out of shape because I missed Indian Market in Santa Fe….AGAIN.  So there will be a theme for the next day or so while I work it out for myself.  This beautiful Jingle Dancer performed at Aborignal Days here in the Hat in June.  She is from the Piegan, or Pikani People in the SW corner of Alberta.  the Jingle Dance is so elegant and stately; the outfits so brilliant, but what captured me the most was the beautful face of this young woman.

Blue Sky Tipis

Here we go…Tipis again!  I adore tips, but you already know that.
In this painting, the poles seem to hold up the sky. Such exquisitely beautiful dwellings!

Winter Sunset Camp

I’ve always had a “thing” for tipis, and wonder if maybe I lived in one in a former life.  They are about the only thing I ever paint from my imagination…that is, not from my own personal experience.  This is an example of that……purely imaginary, and thus the fanciful colours and design. Please forgive any historical or cultural inaccuracies!

Fancy Dancer

I met this beautiful young woman at the Aboriginal Days festivities last weekend and was entranced by  her graceful and elegant dance. A member of the Piikani People, she lives in the far SW corner of the province, and is a talented musician as well as a dancer. This was so much fun to paint; the colours, the bead work,  ribbons and feathers and then that beautiful face on top of everything else! An artist’s dream come true.

War Dance

OK please forgive me just one more photograph. Some things just are better as photographs…how could a painting ever do this justice? and I wanted to share it with all of you. (Having said that, I probably will attempt to paint some of the images from today.)
I went to the Aboriginal Day Celebrations today and it was just SO beautiful. My eyes were dazzled with the outfits and the grace of the dancers, my toes bounced with the rhythm of the drums.   This extraordinary young man is from the Piegan Tribe in the SW corner of the province, and he’s doing the Traditional War Dance….a visual feast.

Oh, and I did do my painting today; look to see it tomorrow.

Aboriginal Day

Tuesday, June 21st was National Aboriginal Day in Canada.  I’ve been watching our local native people set up tipis in a park here in Medicine Hat this week; I went and hung out a bit and took some photos.  I’ve always loved tipis; the shape, their profile against the sky, and the gorgeous designs.  Looking forward to tomorrow when  there’ll be  some festivities.  I think I’ll go and check it out.

The Outrider

The World Professional Chuckwagons were in town this weekend, so lots of action here in the Hat.  I was happy to see that Shawn Calf Robe was still outriding, and took the opportunity to do a portrait of him and his mount, pacing  about just before the race.  Shawn has the kind of face that portrait painters dream about, and when you combine that with a beautiful thoroughbred and all the gear…. let’s just say, I really enjoyed doing this “daily”.
