Sagebrush Symphony

Wow, the Meadowlarks were singing their heads off this morning, and I’m hoping they’re calling in the rain.  My brother, a rancher, calls them the “Rainmakers”, believing that they have the ability to do just that.  Here’s hoping! SOLD

Tompkins Truck

I came across this old grain truck in a field near Tompkins Saskatchewan 25 years ago, and every time I go through there, I wonder if it’s still there. Saskatchewan has it’s share of rusting old trucks, but they’re slowly being snapped up by collectors. One day I recognised one of my favourites going down the highway on a flatbed!  So who knows where this Tompkins Truck could be by now.

Rim Lit Coulees

This little painting is from that perfect time of evening at the perfect time of year, when the light is slanted and golden, the trees are bathed in their fall foliage and the air is fragrant with fall. Since it’s spring right now, I’m doubly aware of how vastly different and magic in their own way, each of our seasons are.

Bull Trail October

Time for a landscape again; one of my favourite landscapes in the whole world.  This is heading south of Irvine, up the “Bull Trail” towards the Cypress Hills on a balmy October day.   SOLD

Saskatchewan Feed Truck

You’ll be wondering which province I’m in! I did this quick little piece in my booth at the trade show today, from my trip to Saskatchewan a couple of weeks ago.  This gnarly old feed truck was sitting in a yard beside the road into my sister’s ranch, and I just liked the look of it; so competent and rugged, just like many of the people there.

Orpington Stroll

Ah, the silly roosters; there’s something so comical about them that I can’t resist painting them.  I really should have chickens of my own and am so grateful to my friends for sharing theirs. So far I haven’t even had  to clean the hen house!

Orpington Rooster

This magnificent rooster belongs to friends, who have a wide variety of livestock and pets.  Evidently this breed, the Orpington, is renowned for it’s charming personality, gorgeous silver and gold plumage and it’s delicious meat. Not that he’ll have to worry about finding himself in a stew pot! As long as he’s living where he does, I believe he’s in for a long and decorative life.

Echodale Horse Power

We have a beautiful little regional park here near Medicine Hat; an old  homestead, right on the S. Saskatchewan River. Complete with houses, barns,  machine sheds, gardens,  poultry runs,  and a blacksmith shop, Ecodale Park takes us back to times as they once were. Today’s painting is of  Ecodale’s heavy horse teams, always ready to provide the horsepower and steadfast work ethic so crucial to the success of our forefathers. What would we ever do without the power and loyalty of our horses?

Still Standing

The Mossleigh elevators are a little down at the heel, and starting to lean into each other, but they’re still holding up the sky.
Most of their kind are gone, and what we’ve replaced them with are these hulking concrete terminals that block the sun!  I wonder if, in 50 years we’ll be all nostalgic about the new ones and wish we still built iconic and interesting structures like that.  Somehow I doubt it.

Laur’s Giants

For several years, my sister Laur grew the Russian Giant sunflowers, and let me say, they were gi-normous. They stand about 7 ft. tall, and as they mature their faces turn into a huge disc, their leaves the size of platters….they look like a scraggly row of lanky ruffians. When out in the yard, a person is inclined to have the feeling that someone is watching them!
As I’ve said before, I love sunflowers, but I’ve always stuck to the smaller, less stalker-like varieties.
