Laura’s Boots

Bright southern Alberta summer sunshine,  pansies in an old enamel jug, and Laura’s boots & spurs…..that’s my idea of a fine “found still Life.” I “found” it on branding day at the Q last June, and Laura got married a month or so later.  I think maybe this is the wedding present I’ve been trying to come up with for her and Scott.

Stampede News

Well today, there was no time to paint, so all you get is a photo.  It’s the 125th Anniversary of the Medicine Hat Stampede and my house is full of people.  Great and wonderful people.  Family and friends.  We had a great day; the weather is absolutely perfect, and there was never a dull moment.

Because of the Anniversary, the Stampede is having a reunion of all the past royalty, so this town is absolutely full to the brim with beautiful cowgirls of every vintage.  They took up 2 city blocks in the parade this morning, mostly on horseback, and were truly a sight to behold. One of them is my darling friend Terri Mappin (whose photography blog is attached to this blog of mine) which is why she and her hubby Brad and their 2 little “dudes” are staying here at my house. Many others of those girls are well-known to me as well,  and beloved because I’ve known them all their lives, or they worked for me in my store, or both!
I sure hope somebody got some photos in the parade; I was too busy gawking and tearing up, so all you get is another of my favourite subjects….bucking horses as they moved into their pens at the grounds.

Art Show @ The Hyatt

Well, I risked life and limb and managed to find
(a) downtown Calgary
(b) the Hyatt Hotel!!!

Got my booth set up in the gorgeous Sandstone Lobby, and am tickled pink to be here. What a beautiful art show we have going!
So for today, this is all you get.  Summer and life have gotten in the way of my daily painting practice, but maybe I’ll get a chance to paint here today.  Come by & see me if you’re in town!

Pansies for the Porch

Last week when we went to the ranch for the branding, there on the front porch among the assorted spurred up boots, were these perky little pansies.  Trust my cousin Kerrie to have everything so beautiful.  She’s from a long line of famous gardeners and cooks.

Laura and Robert

A photo today…. spent time at a family branding over the past 2 days, and there’s no wireless internet there.  So I confess to taking a day off from painting!
After a cold and windy week, we had a great day today.  The work got done, the food and company were fabulous, and as always the photo ops were sublime.  This is  my young friend Laura and her pal Robert, heeling calves.

Locked and Loaded

A team roping horse, backed into the chute, waiting for the barrier to release, every muscle aquiver, totally intent on his task, alert to every possibility…..makes me think of a term the military guys I know use for a state of hyper-readiness. “Locked and loaded”.

New Moon Romance

Thought it was time for a little romance in my blog! That element has been neglected I think.  Everywhere I look, I see artists romanticising the west, so today it’s my turn to take a stab at it.
Silhouettes are tricky with watercolour, and I like the feel of them, so once in awhile I have to paint one.  Played with the sky for a supernatural effect…. to add to the romance! Now all we need is a manuscript.

Katherine & Chester @ Horse Thief Cave

Writing-On-Stone is a magical place, and a highlight on trail rides down there is Police Coulee.  What sounds quite innocent is revealed to be more like a canyon, and was the conduit for whiskey traders and horse thieves back & forth across the American line.  Here’s my friend Katherine and the famous Chester at Horse Thief Cave.  They have a thuggish look about them don’t you agree?

Cowgirls Rock

How lucky are we to live in a country where girls and women don’t need any one’s permission  to follow their bliss. There are lots of cowgirls in my family and in my acquaintance; trick riders, horse trainers, team ropers, barrel racers, veterinarians and ranchers.  This doesn’t mean that they aren’t engineers, teachers, nurses or doctors as well. Wonder what the Taliban would think of that.SOLD
