Good Morning Crow

On the Thursday morning of the rodeo, I wandered over to the grounds to absorb the behind-the-chutes action. There was a “murder” of crows hanging around the bucking horses, raising hell and generally dominating the scene as only crows can do. This guy sat on the top rail and tried out his version of a stare-down with me. I won, and he left.

As always, it left me wondering about the secret life of crows and all other non-human species.

Emotion

Not saying what today’s painting is about…that would preclude you letting it do the talking!  So let me know what it says to you….I’ll be interested to hear.

Evening Comes Stealing

My favourite place to walk is a loop around the horse pasture, along the S. Saskatchewan River.  The evening was stealing in when I walked the other night; the coulees drawing the purple, green and blue shadows up over their knees like you or I would a quilt. The warm last rays of sun tipped everything orange, and even the shadows borrow an edge of that magic light, while the sagebrush goes defiantly turquoise…an exact compliment of the orange.   I don’t often wish I was an oil painter, but today I craved brilliant oil paint colours in order to fully express that glow.

Lillies and Light

The people in charge of our city parks here in Medicine Hat, have outdone themselves again this year.  The flower beds are just stunning, with colour combinations and varieties of flowers that just boggle my mind.  A display near my house features these tall, exotic lilies with brilliant orange flowers on tall spikes, and they’re surrounded with maroon, orange and green flowers and foliage.  What really caught my eye though, was the light coming through the big leathery leaves of the lilies, illuminating the brilliant colour scheme that mother nature has arranged for our pleasure.

White Horse Series-#1

I’ve been playing around in series again, experimenting with abstraction.  This, the first in the series is pretty much my usual M.O wherein the horse has to be anatomically correct and things pretty much representational.  I let myself go wild with the sky and put on a funky border.  We’ll see what I can come up with tomorrow.

Pretty Painted Bull

As you know, I love colour, and that’s one of the reasons I’m such a rodeo fan.  If you want colour, that’s where it’s at Baby! Rodeo people are colourful, in every sense of the word, but oh,  the horses and the bulls!!

The Wind_ painting stage

I dithered quite awhile; looking at photos of wild skies and at the gloomy, heavy sky outside my windows!  Finally had to get at it.  I found a 2″ flat brush and started in with the orange and yellow across the mid sky, and dragged purple and blue in below that, down through the horses, to the horizon. Fun…and stressful! Banged in some grass while it was damp so that the horizon wouldn’t have too many hard edges.

Now for the big racing black cloud overhead.  I slopped in a ton of paint, and then I mixed green and poured it over top and let it run.  Then orange along the bottom edge, and flung in with my brush.  Yikers. I think I’m ruining it, but we won’t know till it’s finished, will we.

Space Junk

OK,  I was going to throw this out, but then I was surfing through some of my favourite daily painting blogs and found some abstractions by another artist that made just about as much sense as this does.  This modern wonder was inspired by a doodle that someone left at my desk at work this week. It can be whatever you need it to be.  With a hug from me thrown in!

Painted Pretty Steer

This guy is a retired roping steer that friends of mine have kept around just because he’s so darned easy on the eyes. I’ve painted him before, but with my new commitment to abstraction, I decided to try him again.  He’s already pink and purple, orange and green; all I had to do is push that a bit.  The attitude was a freebie.         SOLD

Along the Hoodoo Trail, 3

Obviously I’m working in “series” these days, and this is me pushing the envelope on abstraction….again.  I really am attached to the outside edges of things and accuracy and a feeling of volume in my work.  I keep telling myself to push the colour and simplify shapes.  Again in this one I used pen & ink and Faber-Castell coloured felt pens along with a little watercolour.  Badlands on “roids”.
