Well, here’s the portrait I did last week, before my portrait class. What can be cuter than a child with a pup (and a cuter kid would be hard to find!…which which doesn’t hurt either).
There were several elements that made this a real challenge to paint, and when I see it here I feel it’s not finished yet. However, for today, this is it!

Drawing
Here’s a drawing I did earlier in the week, and NOW I’m at a portrait workshop. Four days in Canmore with Liz Wiltzen. It really is a great life! We drew all day today. Pencil on paper. Too bad I didn’t know then what I learned today! Will have to attempt this portrait of a child and a puppy again, once I have this workshop under my belt.

A Pup for Everyone
A few weeks ago, friends showed up at the horse sale in Maple Creek with seven red and blue heeler pups! They were the most adorable pups in the world and at the cutest possible wiggly fat stage of puppy-dom. And seven of them!! Needless to say, the kids (who were pretty darn adorable themselves) were in heaven; there was no fighting or tears because….there was a pup for everyone.

Over the Moon Kitty
Last night this crazy cat came in and sprawled on the rug at my feet in what I call her “Aren’t I pretty?” pose. She looks like she’s flying, complete with a kink in her tail. So I did a pen & ink sketch of her right then, and took a photo. Today I re-did the sketch on watercolour paper and made her jump over the moon. That’s the great thing about being an artist…you can even make your cat do things she has no intention of doing! SOLD

In His Shoes 6
Remember that closet I was cleaning out? Well what did I find but some little old runners from my son’s childhood. He probably wore these when he was about 5 years old. It seems like last year to me, and yet things are so different. The shoes he wears now are very grown up ones indeed.
What is it about shoes that is so evocative of the person who wore them…especially tattered ones like these.

Flowers & Pickles
If you grew up in a rural environment and in my generation, then you know what August was all about! We would can and freeze, butcher, harvest and pickle every garden and farm product we had on the place! Amongst all that we’d be making meals for our sizable family plus the haying crew or the combiners, depending on the year, along with whoever else showed up. By the end of those summer days (some times around midnight) we’d swear we never wanted to cook another meal, or wash another dish!
No wonder I can’t let summer go by without making a few pickles at the very least. I did a dozen jars of dills last evening,(I was finished long before midnight) and this was the still life I “found” on my cupboard this morning.

Eveylyn
Those of you who know me know what a struggle I have doing people. And if adults are hard, I find children to be nearly impossible. As a matter of fact I think this is the first watercolour of a baby that I’ve ever attempted! I met Evelyn this week while in Calgary; her grandma, Jan, is my good friend, so I got to spend some time with her. She is so precious and so beautiful that I was motivated to try and paint her. Don’t you just love that sober and contemplative gaze?!

Orpington Stroll
Ah, the silly roosters; there’s something so comical about them that I can’t resist painting them. I really should have chickens of my own and am so grateful to my friends for sharing theirs. So far I haven’t even had to clean the hen house!

Toy Story III
I wonder if when I’m away or out of the house, if these toys come to life and have on-going dramas and adventures-maybe even a romance or two. Probably not; Possum would undoubtedly put a swift end to any such nonsense. It wouldn’t be pretty.
