Jingle Bull

Today I had too much fun with this.  I can’t imagine a better job!  ThJingle Bulle dicipline of daily painting is interesting; I paint things that I never would in a larger format.  They’re so much FUN though, that it’s hugely added to the enjoyment, and I think has opened up a lot of venues of expression.  I find myself asking myself “what if” a lot more than I ordinarily would.  Like today…what if I painted a pretty rodeo bull all decked out for Christmas.  What IF!!

Sitting Pretty

It was a “dog day” today.  Nothing but a dog would do.  So I did another portrait of my good friend Stu.  The day I met him, he was out & about with his person, Brenda, and there were no livestock around.  We wanted him to do his border collie “thing” and look all intense. All he could think to do was look pretty.  There was obviously no work to do!  So this is Stu with no horses to supervise or cattle to herd…..having a day off.

Bossy Cow Heaven

Well I nearly went cross-eyed trying to do this drawing.  The reference photo had 6 cows in it and trying to figure out where one spotted cow ended and another began was some fun.  Have you ever noticed in a herd of Holsteins, how individual each of their spot patterns are, and how varied?  Bet you’ll be checking it out from now on, won’t you.

Stu

Well, we’re way overdue for a dog portrait, so meet Stu!
Like most border collies, nothing makes Stu happier than helping out with the livestock. Luckily, his “people”  Brenda & Danny  provide him with lots of fun & excitement.

Pretty Painted Bull

As you know, I love colour, and that’s one of the reasons I’m such a rodeo fan.  If you want colour, that’s where it’s at Baby! Rodeo people are colourful, in every sense of the word, but oh,  the horses and the bulls!!

Painted Pretty Steer

This guy is a retired roping steer that friends of mine have kept around just because he’s so darned easy on the eyes. I’ve painted him before, but with my new commitment to abstraction, I decided to try him again.  He’s already pink and purple, orange and green; all I had to do is push that a bit.  The attitude was a freebie.         SOLD

Bully For You!

This guy was standing beside the road over in Saskatchewan one day.  He sure thinks he’s pretty, and I guess we’ll all agree.  I used a little of my abstract tactics with this one…giving cartoon edges jumping up the colour with the felt pens. Why not!?

Money Maker

This lovely range cow is from my brother’s herd, and here she is, making a living out on the southern Alberta prairie and ready to have a calf.  She’s hardy, resourceful and a producer.  Now if the Gods are with us and there are no recent scares like “Mad Cow Disease” we might be able to call her a “Money Maker”.

XL Chuckwagon

Here’s another relic of the past.  The XL Ranch was across the Bow River from our winter pastures, and this old chuckwagon was still around when I was young.  The Centennial of the Canadian Cattlemen’s Assoc. in 1996 was good for anyone who still knew how to build these utilitarian units since many big ranches had new ones built to take on the big cattle drive across the British Block north of Medicine Hat that year.

When the west was being settled, these kitchens on wheels rolled with the cattle (and the cowboys who worked with them), and the grumpy old cooks were the most popular guys in camp….famous for their talent with bacon, biscuits and beans.

Calving Time

Hello!  Look who’s just arrived, along with spring.  It really feels spring-like and the days are wonderfully long, the sun warm and delightful.  The very best thing about winter is the day that it starts to lose it’s icy grip, and the word starts to awaken with new life.
