Orpington Stroll

Ah, the silly roosters; there’s something so comical about them that I can’t resist painting them.  I really should have chickens of my own and am so grateful to my friends for sharing theirs. So far I haven’t even had  to clean the hen house!

Orpington Rooster

This magnificent rooster belongs to friends, who have a wide variety of livestock and pets.  Evidently this breed, the Orpington, is renowned for it’s charming personality, gorgeous silver and gold plumage and it’s delicious meat. Not that he’ll have to worry about finding himself in a stew pot! As long as he’s living where he does, I believe he’s in for a long and decorative life.

Cottontail

These little cottontail rabbits are, I think, one of the species that adapts itself to whatever seems to be the trend.  I see them out city green strips and yards, as well as in rural areas where they’ve always been. Unlike the Canmore bunnies of recent infamy, these little guys don’t seem to be proliferating at a problematic rate, and who could ask for a sweeter lawn ornament!?

Cochrane Barn

On my recent road trip to the mountains, I stopped in at Cochrane for a bit.  This formerly sleepy little cowtown tucked into the foothills of the Rockies, is now a happening place as Calgary creeps (and leaps!) ever closer.
I was glad to see that this red barn, like an old friend, is still part of the landscape.

Old Shop, Quilchena Ranch

This is just one of the many lovely old buildings in the several ranch yards we visited when at Quilchena Ranch last spring. There were shops and smithy’s and barns, all so well laid out and beautifully built. These were needed to keep the ranch operational, back in the days when they had to rely on themselves to keep things fixed, shod and running.  Many ranches then even had a schoolhouse.
They still have all the equipment but the fixing etc is done in town and the buildings …except for the barns which are still well used, wear a mantle of that fabulous nostalgia that hooks me every time.

Guineafowl Clowns

You want to talk about bird-brains, I think guineafowl are the poster-kids! While they don’t appear to share a single brain amongst them they certainly are interesting to look at.  The plumage is eye-dazzling with it’s dizzying patterns of white dots and dashes on black, all of this on a  pear-shaped body. Add to that the clown-faces with the funny red wattles, featherless blue heads and wild Mohawk hairdos, and it makes for a hilarious combo I must say.  Originating from Africa, home of many exotic creatures, I think these might be the best proof yet of Mother Nature’s quirky sense of humour.

Setting Sun Barn

There’s a ranch hidden in a coulee on the south slope of the Cypress Hills. and this stately old barn  presides over the yard from it’s position in the side of the hill. It was built in 1914, so it’s nearing it’s 100th birthday, and it’s as solid and functional as ever.  I love the unusual white body with red trim, which is the opposite of  the norm…but this isn’t just your ordinary barn. Further evidence of that is the taxidermied longhorn head mounted on the frontSOLD

Wash Day

There’s a pretty little farmyard in a creek bottom on the way to Elkwater, and every once in awhile I’d go by on wash day, which always tickled me.  These days, this farmyard is abandoned so I’m really glad I had stopped one chinooky summer day and taken a photo.  Looks like a great day for drying laundry on the line….imagine the fresh scent of those clothes!

Barn @ The Pinhorn

This lovely old barn is situated down on the Milk River in the far southern edge of the province. The Pinhorn is the name of a grazing reserve, and the headquarters are located in a deep and rugged  part of that beautiful little river’s basin.  This country is still wild and remote, full of all kinds of natural dangers. The young cowboys who work here are hardy and resourceful, reminding  me of some of the rugged individuals I knew as a child, my own parents included. It’s like a “reality check” from the world we now inhabit. SOLD

Left to the Wind

Rural Alberta and Saskatchewan are rife with abandoned farmsteads, this one being south of the Great Sandhills of Saskatchewan.  As farm income declines and farmers either leave for town or expand to super-size, many lovely old places are left to the elements, many communities struggle to remain viable.

I think about that whenever I’m sitting in traffic in Calgary
