Down at the Heel

Well, here I am in Maple Creek, having a great time with old friends and new…SO much fun that there’s scarcely time to paint.  When I finally got around to it & got my drawing banged out, I came to discover that I’d left home with everything I needed except my paint!!!!  So off I go to my friend Mary’s tonight;  we shared her studio, had a visit and I borrowed her palette. Phew. I got my daily done, after already missing 2 days this week.  I think it’s become if not an addiction, a compulsion!

Forgotten

When my Aunt relocated to a new farm yard, this relic of that farm’s early days was left out in the pasture below the corrals.  Unlike today’s fiber glass and plastic vehicles, this one will gradually return to the earth from which it was made. Unless someone comes along and restores it.

Again, I used only my flat brush for this one.  Can you tell?  It’s really fun and I think I’m less inclined to “over work”.

Tompkins Truck

I came across this old grain truck in a field near Tompkins Saskatchewan 25 years ago, and every time I go through there, I wonder if it’s still there. Saskatchewan has it’s share of rusting old trucks, but they’re slowly being snapped up by collectors. One day I recognised one of my favourites going down the highway on a flatbed!  So who knows where this Tompkins Truck could be by now.

Deanz Garage 2

Here’s another trip down nostalgia lane.  One of my road trip favourites is “Deanz Garage”. Located 20 or 30 miles east of High River, this lovely retro-garage has provided me with several painting opportunities…the latest being this one here. This summer I came by there, and instead of  the usual ancient old trucks, he had this really bad-ass car.  I mean what IS the story here?  It’s a 40’s vintage somethingorother, with an Iron Cross for a rear view mirror, and yes, those are spikes  across the sun visor!  It’s painted matte black, and it looks just plain…..cool!  So what is the story here? Any guesses?

Little Ol’ Truck

This Little Ol’ Truck showed up at the Bassano Homecoming this summer, along with a lot of other neat old jalopies, cars, tractors and such.  I can’t remember what this truck was; maybe some of you know.  It’s nothing I’d ever heard of before, and so cute I had to paint it.

Pumps @ Embudo Station

One of the most interesting places to stop in at when you find yourself in New Mexico, is “The Classical Gas Museum”. It’s located north of Santa Fe, halfway to Taos on the main highway. The fellow who owns the place has a fondness for old gas station memorabilia…..which I happen to share!  Check out this row of  pumps standing in the New Mexico sunshine, lookng for all the world like a row of people waiting for a parade!

Mossleigh Truck

Mossleigh is a tiny town, a hamlet really, somewhere between the Siksika Reserve and Okotoks.  The other day on the way through there, I came across a NEW old truck!  This guy was probably very important…look at all that he could haul with these racks on the back.  I’ve no idea of the make or year, but I bet some of you do.  Please let me know if you do.
It was such a pretty day, with the canold fields just coming into bloom; bet this little ol’ truck has seen many such days in his lifetime. Don’t you wish he could talk?

Patti’s Wagon

Funny thing about some artists.  A trip past their house and a person can tell an artist (or a very interesting person) must live there. My friend Patti is both of those.  She does the most extraordinary drawings I’ve ever seen, and she’s fabulously gorgeous and dresses like a diva.  And here’s her lovely old house, with a charming flower garden, a picket fence, and as a final touch, that lemon yellow volkswagon bug parked at the curb!  Every time I pass there it’s a “Found Still Life” beckoning me.

Embudo Pumps

Embudo Station is a village right on the Rio Grande River, mid-way between Santa Fe and Taos.  The “Classical Gas Museum” is one of the local attractions there.  Thank goodness for people who treasure our cultural artifacts.  This place is a haven for everything pertaining to 50’s vintage (and older) gas stations.  Don’t these pumps look like a group of people gathered to have a visit.  Lookit that one guy  leaning on his shovel!

GMC for Sale

This cool old truck lives on the route I take to see my horse, and it never fails to entertain. Right now it’s virtually buried in snow, and makes a gorgeous picture that way as well.  I remember having a truck like this when I was just a little kid.  Anybody else out there that old?
