Story Robe

Those who have been following have heard me going on about trying to be more abstract, and so here’s another direction that one could go with that.  Oh wait a minute….this isn’t my art at all! I “borrowed” it from a story robe in the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center in Great Falls. The robe was a gift to the explorers by the Indians of the region, and this is only a small sample of the many many painting on the robe. I love the gesture that is achieved with such elegant and simple lines.  To me, this looks like a chief (on horseback…note the headdress) meeting someone from another tribe and offering the pipe. The other person is disarming his bow. What d’you think?

Sweetgrass Pronghorn

Well I missed a day because of……a road trip!  And now, rather than a painting, you get a photo.  I took this a couple of hours ago, just north of the American border, on my way back from seeing the Charlie Russell watercolours at the CMRussell museum in Great Falls.  Wow, what a show, and  a nice little getaway! There’s nothing like a trip (even a short one) for priming the artistic pump and cranking up the enthusiasm for life.

My Polly

Polly is in danger of being the most painted horse of the times, and here she is again…lookin’ good, for an old(er) girl!

Beautiful, snake-savvy and smart, she knows my vehicle, her white blazed face following every move till I deliver the cookies, or mints or special senior horse feed (her winter treat). Or even just a good belly rub.  It’s been a great summer for the horses; lots of grass, beautiful calm sunny weather and best of all….very few bugs!

White Horse Series-#4

With a black drawing pen, I’m too able to create little dips & doodles, so this time I used a charcoal pencil and allowed myself straight lines only! It is fascinating to me how very little information you need to include in order to have an image that says “horse’! This would not be mistaken for camel, cow, donkey or even zebra. That little piece of “knowing” has been the gem I’ve taken from this exercise in abstraction….A horse is a horse, of course of course.

White Horse Series-#1

I’ve been playing around in series again, experimenting with abstraction.  This, the first in the series is pretty much my usual M.O wherein the horse has to be anatomically correct and things pretty much representational.  I let myself go wild with the sky and put on a funky border.  We’ll see what I can come up with tomorrow.

Pretty Painted Bull

As you know, I love colour, and that’s one of the reasons I’m such a rodeo fan.  If you want colour, that’s where it’s at Baby! Rodeo people are colourful, in every sense of the word, but oh,  the horses and the bulls!!

Laura and Robert

A photo today…. spent time at a family branding over the past 2 days, and there’s no wireless internet there.  So I confess to taking a day off from painting!
After a cold and windy week, we had a great day today.  The work got done, the food and company were fabulous, and as always the photo ops were sublime.  This is  my young friend Laura and her pal Robert, heeling calves.

Mad Possum

Can you see that p.o’d look in her eyes, and the one cocked ear?  She was camped out on top of the barbecue, one of her favourite roosts, and the magpies proceeded to harass her. It’s on-going around here, and so far the magpies win, hands down….or should I say wing tips down?

Alberta Wildies

Here’s another more fanciful piece…..more on my attempts to be less “literal”.  I combined my inspiration from a spring horse gathering with my friends from Kananaskis, along with photos I’ve taken near Black Diamond. This is the same size as yesterday’s offering.   So while this is from my experience, it has an iconic or symbolic feel to it.

Painted Pretty Steer

This guy is a retired roping steer that friends of mine have kept around just because he’s so darned easy on the eyes. I’ve painted him before, but with my new commitment to abstraction, I decided to try him again.  He’s already pink and purple, orange and green; all I had to do is push that a bit.  The attitude was a freebie.         SOLD
