River Birch Abstraction

More along the lines of abstraction, this is a close-in view of the beautiful birch tree in the back yard. You can see how close I was…close enough to hug a birch!

Rocks & Trees

Today’s offering might be on the verge of abstract.   Often when on the phone or in a meeting,  I doodle fir trees and rocks.  My parents, while raising us on the prairie, made a concerted effort to get us to the mountains every summer. As Canadians I think that rocks and trees are part of our national psyche; after all, they constitute the landscape of probably 3/4 of this beautiful country.

Relaxed & Alert 3

Well,  here’s the 3rd in this series…I tried to do the drawing without lifting my charcoal from the paper and with less attachment to results.  It still is representational though. And it still looks like my work. I’m not much of a success at this abstraction, but I do sort of like the loosey-goosiness of this.

Sun Ponies

Maybe abstract isn’t the word….these latest paintings seem to have a lot of symbolism, and though they’re not rendered in my usual realistic style, the elements are fully recognisable. These ponies make me think of the ancient cave paintings we saw when I was in France….they were so much fun to draw and easy!  “A working artist is a playing artist”…right?!

Full Moon Eagle

Another attempt at something “abstract” ….this bald eagle combines my love of birds, the full moon,  and of colour.  It’s still representational though, and would not qualify as abstract.  Better keep trying I guess.

Through Yellow Aspen

This felt very small today, after the big hummer!  But it gave me a chance to catch up on a few things around here…badly neglected things, trust me.
Hope you’re all having a creative and enjoyable weekend.

“Backlit”…so far

Back to my bigger work…..here’s what I did so far on a  9 X 14″ painting.  I’ve drawn it on a  piece of illustration board, which I somehow acquired  accidentally.  This is just an experiment; because the board is hard to deal with, I thought I’d do a silhouette-y piece that I could splash around in the paint with. If it doesn’t work, no big loss.

I did the drawing and then slopped in a bunch of paint.  Next I’ll paint the horses & rider….who knows how it’ll turn out!

Trees In Winter

I just wanted to play today….with colour. I paint with 3 colours, as taught to me by my Swami, John Farnsworth.  “The Three” as he calls them, are specific hues of red, yellow and blue, and a great deal of pleasure is found in the exquisite semi-neutral and neutral colours that can be arrived at from  these 3 primaries.   I  also enjoyed using the negative space between and around the trees to express those colours.  Ain’t life grand?!
