Roxy

RoxyHere is another of my doggie acquaintances…Roxy.  She came to visit me a couple of weeks ago with her person, Amanda, who grew up next door.  Did you ever see such a sweet face, or eyes that were more like bright little buttons……or a wonkier pair of ears. Sometimes I get real lucky and she gets doggie-sat by me.  Looking for that to happen any time!

The Return of the Redpolls

All of a sudden my bird feeder is full of Redpolls and there’s not a chickadReturn of the Redpollsee or a nuthatch in sight!  Being irratic migrators, you never know for sure when they’ll show up, but they come in flocks when they do!  The subject of my painting is a little female, since she lacks the rosy colouring the males sport on their breast.  Now the only problem is to keep Possum from turning them into hors d’oeuvres.

Amee Again!

Well if at first you don’t succeed, keep trying!  Portraiture is one of the hardest things a painter can attempt, and as you all know I really find it challenging. Amee was such a beautiful model with her sculpted face and fabulous dreadlocks. This time I tried her portrait in watercolour…..it looks more like her, but I’m still  not convinced her mom would know her!

Talking Possum

This cat has lost her marbles lately.  After  wakening me  from deep sleeps last night because she figured she wanted to be out rather than in, she then spent the day imposing her will upon me as well! When I try to ignore her, this beseeching look along with loud plaintive wails, soon have me hustling to do her bidding.  Not sure when she stopped being my cat and I started being her bell hop.

Chet’s Pup

Well, here’s the portrait I did last week, before my portrait class.  What can be cuter than a child with a pup (and a cuter kid would be hard to find!…which which doesn’t hurt either).
There were several elements that made this  a real challenge to paint, and when I see it here I feel it’s not finished yet.  However, for today, this is it!

Blue Duck

Here’s Blue Duck, one of the horses on my cousin’s ranch.  Don’t you just love the blue and purple! Those colours are no exaggeration; he really is this colour….. a real pastel painted pony.

Sitting Pretty

It was a “dog day” today.  Nothing but a dog would do.  So I did another portrait of my good friend Stu.  The day I met him, he was out & about with his person, Brenda, and there were no livestock around.  We wanted him to do his border collie “thing” and look all intense. All he could think to do was look pretty.  There was obviously no work to do!  So this is Stu with no horses to supervise or cattle to herd…..having a day off.

Stare Down at Breakfast

This crazy cat has cabin fever! Her first trip into our new winter season was this morning, and she freaked! If I hadn’t opened the door, she’d have left a Wily Coyote style hole in it on her way through!  So she stalks me, she spends time glaring out the window. . She chases her toys, and then when she goes missing, I’ll find a big lump under the covers in my bed!! This is the stare down I got while making breakfast this morning. It might be a long winter.

A Pup for Everyone

A few weeks ago, friends showed up at the horse sale in Maple Creek with seven red and blue heeler pups!  They were the most adorable pups in the world and at the cutest possible wiggly fat stage of puppy-dom.  And seven of them!!  Needless to say, the kids (who were pretty darn adorable themselves) were in heaven; there was no fighting or tears because….there was a pup for everyone.

On the Bit

Here’s a larger project that I’ve been working on for most of the week, amongst other diversions. After a summer of fooling around, it’s time for me to get to work!
This beautiful horse won the ranch horse competition in the Hat this summer and I wanted to paint him at work,  all geared up in silver spade bit, handbraided bosal and romel rein, and handmade horsehair mecate.
The honouring of those traditional art forms is one of the side benefits  of modern horsemanship, and I for one, am very appreciative of all of it.
