A Gift From Jill

One of the really great things about summer is all the company I get.  I’ve had visits from many friends and rellies over the past month, the latest being my niece Jill.  She showed up here with this beautiful vase, stuffed full of a “ditch bouquet” that she’d picked beside the highway somewhere in Saskatchewan!  What a girl.  This porcelain vase is extraordinary; made in Portugal, it has a gorgeous, shiny, iridescent glaze which made it almost impossible to paint.  I tried though, and it’s much prettier than the painting shows. Trust me.

As you can see, Jilly knows her aunt very well…chickens and sunflowers!

Meadowlark @ Writing-On-Stone

Bear with me people I got really close to a meadowlark down at Writing-on-Stone earlier this month.  Normally they won’t let you within a country mile, but this little guy just sat on his post and did that trilling chirrrp they do, and let me take as many photos as I wanted.  So brace yourselves,  you’ll be seeing more meadowlarks.  Did I say they’re my favourite bird?

White Horse Series-#3

This piece is a bit simpler yet and the red background is my idea of fun….a dramatic backdrop for my #3 guy.  Again,  black pen and no worry about mistakes…I just try to get the essence of “horse”
I’m packing paintings up for my up-coming show in Calgary. Normally I’d rather crawl across broken glass than go to the big city that Calgary has become, but I’m looking foreward to this show.  Hope to see you all there!

White Horse Series-#2

OK, I know this looks pretty simple, but I’m not happy with how much anatomical detail I got in the horse.  It’s like swimming upstream for me to NOT put in details like joints and muscles, dips and curves.  I’m trying for a very stylized horse, and I drew with a black ink pen; there was no erasing or going back. Sigh. Oh well, the painting part was lotsa fun.

From Point A to Point B

One of my favourite daily pursuits is a walk in nature…the prairie, obviously, since I live where I do.  It’s especially delightful from April till September when the meadowlarks are here, intriguing little chiggers that they are.  Everything they do is endearing…like the way they fling themselves into the air and bee-line from fencepost to sagebrush clump……accomplishing what we’re not exactly sure.

Sweetgrass and the Milk

This was painted on the ridge overlooking the campground at Writing-On-Stone Provincial Park. These distinctive hills string themselves in lumps and bumps all along “The Medicine Line” (the American border) like chunks of lapis on a chain.  When the flat plain they rest on plunges into the hoodoos and sandstone of the Milk River’s basin, you have the stuff of legend.
There have been a lot of legends created in this wild landscape, but that’s for another day.

Two Crows Talkin’

Further to our story of the crows from yesterday.  I think the one on the right is the “mom” and the guy on the left is either asking permission or begging forgiveness. What d‘you think?

One Crow Hoppin’

On the weekend, while visiting my parents, we were ALL visited by a family of blue eyed crows.  They spent 15 minutes fighting over and endlessly debating access to the birdbath.  They’re so interesting in their interactions with each other, so obviously social and intelligent.  I’d love to know their opinion of us humans and our activities.  Or would I.

Hens @ Dorothy

The last time I was through the little hamlet of Dorothy on the Red Deer River, I found this little clutch of red hens, free-ranging it out amongst the sagebrush.  When I find scenes like this, I get that powerful nostalgic feeling that hankers for an older, simpler time. Meanwhile, I’m checking my smartphone to see if I have any emails.

Space Junk

OK,  I was going to throw this out, but then I was surfing through some of my favourite daily painting blogs and found some abstractions by another artist that made just about as much sense as this does.  This modern wonder was inspired by a doodle that someone left at my desk at work this week. It can be whatever you need it to be.  With a hug from me thrown in!
