Under A Winter Moon

Under a Winter MoonWe recently had another fabulous full moon, and I simultaneously came across a photo I’d taken of the tipis at our annual Aboriginal Days celebration.  I woke up this morning with the notion of combining the 2 ideas….probably partly inspired by  the long dark nights and the attraction that brings to fire and heavenly bodies.

Shine on Harvest Moon

Last week, returning from the mountains, I took one of my favourite back roads; one that offers miles and miles of uninterrupted native prairie.  As I drove northeast, a pale pink disc peeked over the far, flat horizon, while at the same time the sun was setting on the far, flat southwest horizon. The moon was full and huge, as if attempting to compete with the sun, who was busy splashing everything in vivid tones of orange and pink.  It was quite a contest, and I was aware that though the mountains are stunningly beautiful, so is our prairie.

Over the Moon Kitty

Last night this crazy cat came in and sprawled on the rug at my feet in what I call her “Aren’t I pretty?” pose.  She looks like she’s flying, complete with a kink in her tail.  So I did a pen & ink sketch of her right then, and took a photo.  Today I re-did the sketch on watercolour paper and made her jump over the moon. That’s the great thing about being an artist…you can even make your cat do things she has no intention of doing!   SOLD

Mystic Bison

Recently I posted a photo of Porter’s buffalo which this “daily” is inspired by, but I wanted to add a little symbolism to suggest the power of these incredible animals.
The seven dots in the border represent the stars of the big dipper and the new moon is for possibilities. Representing the fragility of life and it’s beauty is the butterfly……..OR you can assign whatever meanings suggest themselves to you!

Space Junk

OK,  I was going to throw this out, but then I was surfing through some of my favourite daily painting blogs and found some abstractions by another artist that made just about as much sense as this does.  This modern wonder was inspired by a doodle that someone left at my desk at work this week. It can be whatever you need it to be.  With a hug from me thrown in!

Olive and the Moon

All this symbolism lately and here I am painting full moons with eagles and rising suns with trees.  DUH! What about an owl and a SUPER moon?!  No brainer, right?!   To affirm all of that, I just arrived home after a drive home from the hills under…..you guessed it…2012’s fabulous “Super Moon”.

Full Moon Eagle

Another attempt at something “abstract” ….this bald eagle combines my love of birds, the full moon,  and of colour.  It’s still representational though, and would not qualify as abstract.  Better keep trying I guess.
