Front Range Rhythms

There’s something so elegant about the contours of unaltered landscape; the undulations, carvings, upthrusts and foldings. This landscape has all of those as the mountains rear themselves up from the flat bed of the plains, each segment carrying it’s very own eco system and micro-climate. How dare we ever think we can “improve” on any of that.

October Breezes

It’s that time of year! One golden, warm and best of all…windless day after another. Although winter isn’t my favourite, I’m glad to live in a place that enjoys the variety of the 4 seasons.

Lodge @ Ft. Walsh

A few years ago I went to a powwow at Ft. Walsh.  I loved this beautiful white tipi against the black trees and the stacking depths of the hills…those magical Cypress Hills.

I think it’s time for another powwow.

Newly Minted Aspen

Have you ever stopped to enjoy the electric, neon lime green colour of brand new aspen leaves?  While in central Alberta last week, I had lots of opportunity to revel  in that sight.  It’s especially noticable against the black-by-comparison spruce and pine the aspen is interspersed with in that neck of the woods. And then there’s the magical white-and-black trunks. I find that there are some colours paint just can’t fully convey.

Soon

Soon now…within the next month anyway, the aspens in the Cypress Hills will unfurl their exquisite coin-shaped leaves and set about the business of quaking in the breezes.  Nature is so incredible…every species of plant and animal has it’s distinctive characteristics, yet each individual is one-of-a-kind. This clump of aspen is just one
example of that small truth.

Through Yellow Aspen

This felt very small today, after the big hummer!  But it gave me a chance to catch up on a few things around here…badly neglected things, trust me.
Hope you’re all having a creative and enjoyable weekend.

East & West Aspen

OK,  humor me with just one more aspen painting….this one with the same method as yesterday.

This elegant little clump is on the East & West Ranch, where my Grandad and his brothers came in 1896.  These trees are almost at the top of the “bench”, the highest point in the Cypress Hills, and on the watershed for both the Missouri and the Hudson’s Bay systems. It’s comforting to go there and find this landscape pretty much as it was in 1896.

FT. Walsh October II

I wasn’t content with yesterday’s aspen, so today I decided to just paint without doing a drawing at all.  I spritzed the area of the paper where the yellow of the aspen foliage would go and then  dropped in paint and let it bloom.  I built the rest of the painting around that.  I think I like it better.  How about you?

Jingle Dancer 2

Early in the year, I did a version of this young jingle dancer.  I did a closer in painting of her face as a demonstration in class this week, which I think is fresher than the original.  Maybe I’m learning a thing or two with doing the dailies! Hopefully, eh?

The Last Day for Leaves

Today was the last day…..several hard frosts this week and now a warm chinooky day…… golden-clad trees are no longer what we’ll find.  There’s  a knee deep drift of newly fallen leaves on my driveway tonight. It’s dark at breakfast, dark by supper time. Everybody has pumpkins on their doorsteps, and we’ve gone from our favourite grilling recipes to stew and chili.

Having said all that, I do love the changing seasons.  I know that our sometimes severe winters, shape our national psyche in ways many of us aren’t conciously aware of. So here we go, in to winter…..let’s embrace the season.
